I have one fearless, girl. When she was four and had just had her chin stitched up at the emergency room, I watched her carry a chalk board that was bigger than her outside, throw it on the ground, and dangle off the deck by her feet, so she could see what it was like to draw while upside down. I had to tell her to wait until the stitches were out for that experiment. She's seven now, and slightly more cautious, but there were a few years there where I would have liked her to wear a helmet, safety goggles, and steel toed boots at all times.
can i come and play calvin? never thought of wax for the arrow, brilliant! emily has always used vine or tender, young twigs. now we have more options, thank you.
off to wash fabric, just picked up gigantic stack this morning. yipee!
Yep, I think it has to do with mamas of boys...three boys here and I tend to think about the what-ifs way more than my husband. Great post this morning as mine are hooking up their ropes to the trees with caribeaners and rubberbands...better get back outside.
wow! I'm scared of the idea but will show my boys because i know they will talk me into how cool some version of this would be... My husband just called from a pool party where he is with our boys to tell me that our 6yo just fell off of the play set and lost his top front two baby teeth! They would have come out soon anyway but I am glad it was him there and not me or I may never have let them climb again!
I am really impressed by his creativity, "artistic vision", and independence. Even if you're nervous, you're doing a fantastic job of supporting his creativity.
Oh, it's all part of learning and growing, huh? But it is a bit scary for the mom! I think back on the stuff I did while I was young, and a lot of it my mom never even knew about! Ack!
It is a joy to see how (despite nervousness!) you let your children be so much themselves. As a (past)school teacher I can tell you sadly what a rarity this is. Great shots too, by the way!
holy cow, is that cool or what??? But I cant let me 2 and 6 year old see this, or we will be having a all and all out tamahawk party!
(including the scalping of our sisters):)
Have a great weekend!

Dear Amanda,
First i loved your entry on quiet cooking [ i know that was yesterday...] and things you said.
As this one : i have 2 girls. So far we feel safe [let's wait for teenage years to come...] But my youngest one is more of a tomboy.. she could do things like Calvin at the same age. But what i love the most is how proud he is showing his handmade creations. what a reward for a "nervous" mother...like you....?!
4 boys here, too. Lately, they've been sawing. Maybe we should try an ax. Do you have any guidelines or safety rules to suggest? They'd surely love it.
ah, weaponry. my boys have such a love of stick-based weapons, too! sometimes i just look away... i have a great photo from a few years ago of (my) two native american braves with feathered headbands and beaded spears! what fun they had!
Looks like the kids have a bow-and-arrow meme that we parents didn't hear about. Here's my daughter engaged in a similar game: http://tinyurl.com/2cbyd5
Yep that second picture makes me nervous too. But good for you for not letting your fears inhibit their creativeness. Sometimes I let my fears of the "what if's" stop my sons creative endeavours. These pictures make me realize I need to relax and let go.
Thanks for your post. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Maya & Miguel, a show on PBS in the afternoons -- http://pbskidsgo.org/mayaandmiguel -- that emphasizes cultural diversity and language learning but I’m reaching out to talk to parents about the program as part of a marketing project I’m working on with Scholastic.
I found your post and thought I’d reach out to say hello and ask if you’d like to receive a free Maya & Miguel DVD. If you’d like to receive the DVD just email me at Kerri at boldmouth.com with your address and I’ll have it shipped it out to you.
If you do choose to blog about Maya & Miguel show or episodes on the DVD, please make it clear how you received the information. Our goal is to be open and honest with everyone we reach.
hi! I just saw this post and i had to tell you that at this moment I'm resting my head on a pillow covered in a pillowcase that matches the fabric on the far right side of your photo (with the orange rose). This is an old set of sheets give as a wedding gift to my parents and I just love them!
I have 4 boys...I know exactly what you mean!

Boys will be boys. Mine make me nervous ALL the time. They are braver than I. I have 5. And one girl.

I'm thankful i only have girls so far, boys seems to want to give their mothers grey hairs sooner than girls.
