just because

Because we were at my alma mater and that always freaks me out (who wants to go back to High School, I ask?).
Because my kids linger in public bathrooms and it grosses me out (to cries of, 'but you tell us we have to wash our hands!').
Because I was bored and antsy and full of coffee (so I got the camera out).
And yes, okay, because my studio is not quite done yet, and I've got nothing else to show you. That too.
Just because... this is what you get today: an almost-family portrait in a high school bathroom mirror.
Carry on.

i am laughing! it happens that way to me to - hurry, hurry, but i didn't wash my hands...
Posted by: erin | May 09, 2007 at 07:23 AM
I spend my time in public restrooms saying over and over "Dont' touch anything, don't touch anything..." It's my restroom chant.
Posted by: Mama Urchin | May 09, 2007 at 07:34 AM
awesome photo amanda! and ewww! i would totally break out in hives if i had to go back to my high school.
Posted by: brandie | May 09, 2007 at 07:37 AM
Public restrooms - yes great. I know the feeling.
Isn't it lovely to be able carry your "little" one like that? I carried Annemarie for more than a year, because she was light, we both loved it and my oldest one still needed the buggy now and then for a rest ;)
Posted by: diana | May 09, 2007 at 07:56 AM
Ha! Thanks for the laugh. I needed it this morning.

As High School bathrooms (we call them toilets) go, it looks pretty clean!!
Posted by: Jen | May 09, 2007 at 08:18 AM
My son attends my Alma Mater & I'm there EVERY morning & afternoon. And, I must agree about public bathrooms, just breathing in the air makes me feel dirty and catchy. Bluck!
Posted by: Judi | May 09, 2007 at 08:20 AM
Oh my.....it is so CLEAN! I teach in H.S. and I would rather use a porta-potty than the ones we have - including the teachers'. Your school must be very, very nice. P.S. my daughter went through a RR obsession, but quickly got over it, thank goodness.
Posted by: Chris | May 09, 2007 at 08:59 AM
Hilarious! And, you know? In some ways I'd love to go back to high school *briefly* knowing what I know now (at 35!).
Posted by: bellablue | May 09, 2007 at 09:07 AM
really, red and black bathroom! quite nice! but...what are you doing there????
Posted by: colleen | May 09, 2007 at 09:13 AM
What is it about stepping into one's high school? No matter how many years have passed, it's like you never left. Which leaves me running for my car.
Posted by: jean | May 09, 2007 at 09:19 AM
Your expression = the way I feel each time I'm in a public restroom with my 4-year-old. Love it.

You totally freaking CRACK ME UP, Soule Mama!
Public bathrooms are the reason God made Purell! :-)

Oh, you are so funny. "Carry on." When in doubt, tell the unvarnished truth.
Posted by: Maureen | May 09, 2007 at 09:34 AM
I am loving the red and the fury in the photo. Feels like home to me!
Posted by: Jen | May 09, 2007 at 09:52 AM
I think I must say, "eww! don't touch that!" twenty times before we ever make it out of a public bathroom.
hilarious picture, by the way.
Posted by: molly | May 09, 2007 at 10:09 AM
Oh, that picture cracks me up. I have been in the public bathroom "rush, rush, don't TOUCH anything" quandry with my kids many times.
Have a great day!

Ugh! High school AND public restrooms at the same time? It's too much heebie-jeebiness. I have to go get another coffee.
Darling babies though. I always feel like people who hear me in restrooms think I'm a freak because I so stridently say DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING to be followed by DIRTY. NO I SAID DON'T TOUCH IT!! Poor thing's going to have some issues if I don't lighten up a bit.

Perfect.

Your HS bathroom looks better than mine did. Ours was in the basement and was all concrete. The doors were plywood and so gross! When you stood up they only went to the middle of your chest. Not much privacy.
They was a huge mirror...that wasn't really a mirror but a shiny piece of something that never did make you look just right...on the wall.
Public bathrooms are gross! Thank God for hand sanitizer!!

Totally odd question...
Did you make your sling? If not, may I ask what brand it is? I remember a photo of one of your boys in it a while ago, maybe you mentioned it there...
I'm off to dig thru your archives!
Posted by: Amy Lu | May 09, 2007 at 01:44 PM
I found it! That was easier than I expected!
And just in case anyone is wondering, it looks like the same one as the other post. IF it is indeed the same one, it's a New Native sling.
:o)

Hilarious! Thanks for the laugh. It's what I really needed today. It's funny how people out in blog land always seem to post exactly what I need on any given day... oh, and I'm looking forward to studio pics!

I'm impressed: the bathrooms in your high school have doors on their stalls?! Maybe it was the Girls'? Our girls had doors too, but not the Boys'...
Posted by: Frank | May 09, 2007 at 02:19 PM
Just looking at that picture brings back the horrid memory of smoke, cigarettes in the toilets, the principal yelling in the doorway to get to class....I HATED our high school bathroom!
I can just smell it now.

Amy Lu - the sling is not handmade - it's a New Native Carrier. I have several slings, but this one is my favorite. Quite easy to make too - search for 'pouch sling' for instructions.

What are you doing at your Alma Mater in the bathroom?? Ok, I know what you're doing in the bathroom ;) I love it! I am constantly telling my son not to touch anything in public bathrooms...oh but they so rarely listen!
Posted by: Kim | May 09, 2007 at 04:19 PM
That is a really funny and sweet photo. Um, and a really clean restroom for a public high school.

for those of you curious - I was at the school, not to enroll my babes (hee), but to see a kids concert by the local orchestra. My old high school actually has a pretty sweet auditorium these days. One that they built the year after I left. I, on the other hand, spent my drama/band/chorus years (yup) in a crappy, poorly lit, old and smelly excuse for an auditorium. Ah, High School.
Posted by: SOULEMAMA | May 09, 2007 at 06:14 PM
Oh Amanda! You captured it perfectly! I remember those days! The thing that grossed me out the most was when my kids would poop in the public toilet! I'm not really sure why, but I would just get so embarrassed! Anyway, thank you for the laugh.

Family portrait in a high school bathroom mirror. . . why didn't I think of that?
Actually, I'm always glad to see a non-crafting, non-sewing moment, though I must admit, it is still CREATIVE.
I feel less self-persecuted when everyone is sometimes not producing! (good grammar, I know)
Always a pleasure, Soule Mama. I'm here most days. = )

Ugh! Public restrooms!
But what I *really* want to know is: how the heck do you find the time to do such fabulous work with the kiddos? Seriously, spill thy secrets, woman! The rest of us need some extra tips! :-)
