what I love :: Boy

I love hearing language develop, and new words being added to Adelaide's repertoire each day (this week's favorite: 'ca-co-cone,' or telephone). I love hearing her play around with words in her mouth, rolling them around until they come out just as she'd like - "Poppy," "Momeeee," Zazie". She can't say "Calvin" the way she wants, so she calls him, "Boy". Love that. We've all taken to calling him "Boy" now (himself included), which pleases her to no end.
The Lady A and I are missing our Boy today, as he's off with Grammie and Grampie on his first overnight adventure sans parents. I've been talking (and talking) with him about what he can do if he gets sad, misses us, etc, which has only been met with puzzlement, and a matter of fact, "But Mom. Why would I miss you? I'm going to see you tomorrow."
Right. I guess I'm the one who'll be doing the missing.

My mom definitely always did and still does the missing! I love the Boy-story. My godchild Klara often calls her sibling "brother", which I also think quite adorable. Still, its not an option we others have in calling him ;-)

Our 3rd who i think is the same age as Adelaide is doing the same thing...he calls his 8yr old brother "Man"! The 'Man' thinks its great. We also have "careeeeeeeeeeeeie u yo" for Charlie and Lola! I love to listen outside his door as he's just woken and hear him 'lobboloffing' as the other 2 call it.
On the missing thing..we've yet to cross that bridge because the older 2 are determined to go together..and poor granny just isn't ready for that! She'd lose sleep for a week!

I think we will always miss our children more when they are away, at least that is usually what happens when my lil one is away from home.

Good morning to my favourite blog family. Consider posting a video with Lady A and the boys chatting? I bet she is very sweet when calling "momeee".

Love "boy." We call our only daughter "girl." Her brothers call her that and we do, too. I don't know who started it. We've gotten some strange looks for using it.

aw! what a sweet photo of boy. and i totally get that you will probably miss him more than he misses you...so cute!

So funny..... we call our oldest child "The Boy". We started doing that when he started calling his dad, "The Don".
Isn't it funny how after months and months of carefully choosing names for our children.... in an instant that name can be changed to be even more special? I became a JuJu to everyone when my nephews couldn't say Judi, and love it everytime I hear another call me by it.

How lovely!
I love your blog and your photos!
I've been watching it everyday, when i get online, here in Portugal! :)
It took me several weeks to let you a comment, but you are my number one blogger now!
Best wishes!

Oh how sweet, I am sure he will have a super time, what a lucky child he is to have such family who want to share time with him. As for the rolling around of words, my youngest is doing just the same, it is such a special time in their development with lots of Awww moments. I really must record some of them for the future. I have my firsts childs first words as my mobile phone message, I am still with a heavy brick phone as I can not part with it;-)

We've had several iterations of baby-made sibling names... some completely inexplicable ("bobby" = sebastian, for one!). I've tried to write them all down to give me a smile later on. I too enjoy listening to my 2 yo girl talk, sing, repeat to herself as she plays.

What can beat a mother's love to her children? I can feel the pain you are going through.. But it must be fantastic to know that you've done such a good job that he can feel comfortable without you and confident that you are always there with him! He's ok, don't worry!

I bet Miss A will determine alot of things in your household and those boys won't mind a bit!
My 5 yo calls our eldest Yily (Lily) and even writes it that way.Yily never wants her to stop!

boy. i heart that.

Such a sweet pic! Careful with that grandparent thing! Mine spoil my boys so shamelessly that they hardly want to come home! Crazy about little one's vocab here too. Our latest favorites are: Buddha (belly button) Learly (really, as in I'm LEARLY hungry!) and Fidge-a-later (refriderator, of course!). Have a wonderful day, Amanda!

How sweet! And how clever little ones can be! My little girl (she'll be 2 soon) calls her older brother "Boy" also! She can't say "Donovan" (well, "du-uh-min"), so she's simply calls him that. She calls herself and her neighbor friends "Good Girl." She is so sociable that she does a routine of introducing herself and the rest of us to new people--"Me Mommy, boy, daddy, good girl!" I just think it's so clever that they are able to make the connection and make up a name that is appropriate! Banies are so amazing!

I love that picture, its really gorgeous. What a wise "boy" you have there.

Your kids are just so sweet. I love hearing/reading stories about them and to be honest, I don't even like children, much less want to have any. But your kids are so different from what I've ever run into.
Love that A calls Calvin "boy". My older brother's name is Scott which I couldn't say when I was little, but I could say "Dotts"...he's 45 now and the whole fam still calls him Dotts.

It's funny the things that our children come up too. Lately Nathan, my 3 year old, wants to do everything "lickey fast" and I'm only guessing he means lickety split or wicked fast?? haha He also loves to sing Old McDonald and eat donuts. But both of them are all Oh Dawgun's. Luckily he'll say "Mommy sing Oh Dawgun's with a Cow." and I know I'm supposed to break into my broadway show with a rendition of Old MacDonald. haha He's a hoot!

Oh when we had our first little girl after 3 boys, our then 3 year old referred to her as "the girl" for quite some time.
Hope the overnight goes well and that mommy doesn't miss him too much:-)

It is so difficult on us mumma's to let the wee ones go on overnight slumbers. I'm sure you must be feeling his absence. But happily things will all be back to normal for his return. Enjoy your day.

As always, it's such a delight and a vacation to read what goes on in the Soule House! I love it that she calls him Boy! It's like Tarzan and Jane and Boy! Fun!

Oh very sweet! I'm enjoying the language development over here too. Kate is talking up a storm! And lately she has been calling Alison, "Lala," and Henry "Ahtee."

My house has love names as my mother called them when I was little. Some kids have more than one. number one kid is bug. dont even remember how it happpened. Number two is sugar. Also her aunts love name. number 3 is babylove and pooh bear or pooh.
One day someone asked him his name and he took his two middle fingers out of his mouth and said pooh bear. After that we made sure to call by his given name once in awhile. The are all in there teens and twentys and still go by these same names.
I am 47 and some people that know my mom still call me sisie when they here me by my given name they say WHO??

Harry was "the boy" too often. When people asked him his name he would answer "the boy".

our friends youngest began calling his other two siblings (boy and girl) 'guy'...but now he just calls his older brother 'guy'. i think it started because my friend would say come on guys.

I remember the first time my daughter, now 9! went for a sleepover.....I stayed awake most of the night. I wasn't worried for her, it's just that it seemed like there was such a hole in the house. Like a puzzle that's missing a piece I guess. Things are not quite complete when all are not under the roof. Maybe just the "mommy" point of view ;) She had a great time and never mentioned missing us!
Love to read your blog, Thanks for sharing:)

what a sweet post!
and "ca-co-cone"? adorable :)
i really got a kick out of the fact that she doesn't like the way his name sounds when she says it- what an observation!

Awww, what an awesome post... so so so sweet! "Boy". Love that!
Posted by: Jessica Chapman | May 24, 2007 at 09:49 PM
Such sweetness. My brother never could say my name (well, "Katurah" is a mouthful!), so I ended up being "sister" until I was fifteen. Everyone called me that. He was called "boy", too.
And yes, it is always the ones left behind who notice the empty spaces.

Omg, they grow up so fast, don't they.... Sounds like a very mature little man, you've got. My daughter had the same kind of response in my preperations for her first day of kindergarden.... And I was resolved not to cry, but started tearing up anyway as I put her on the bus. She just looked at me, rolled her eyes, and said "you're crying again". *wry smile* Yep.

Dying to know how he did! The girls spent two nights camping in the Airstream with my folks this weekend (at Winslow). Dave and I had TWO NIGHTS alone. What did we do? Fall asleep WAY too early. Call me when you get back!

My mom always told this story of taking me to ballet class for the first time, leaving me somewhere alone. She was frantic and fretting, waiting in the hall, spying on my to make sure I didn't explode into tears of panic. That's when I marched to the door, opened it, and as she was ready to scoop me up and whisk me away from this bad, bad place, I put my hands on my hips and said, "Well -- are you LEAVING???"
xoxo
