what I love :: summer food

It can't be found locally yet, and not even organically...but I couldn't resist a little dive into the season with corn on the cob, cooked on the grill. With pasta salad, and grilled burgers (for the meat eaters among us). Eaten outside, naturally. Where else can you eat your dinner in between swings on the swingset and cartwheels on the grass? It's one of the only times that our busy little babes partake in the kind of leisurely hour-long meal celebration I always dreamed about having with my own family. I love it.
And in just a couple of weeks, our first CSA share of the season will be ready, and then come the berries, and the rhubarb, and the watermelon and.....Oh my....

dinner between swings... for the grown-ups as well? such fun!

I know! I know! We are planting our tomatoes and basil, seeding our cukes, beans, and squashes... just dreaming of popping it all in our mouths. I love this time of year and it's so much fun planting this year with a four year old... the seeds are much more judiciously placed.

Sounds like a wonderful outdoor meal... we were able to eat outside last night for the first time this season too!

I too, dreamed of long lingering picnics with my children - they however, seem to have arrived programmed to eat as quickly as possible and get on with something more interesting!

Oh, this looks like our dinner last Saturday night: grilled corn on the cob, grilled teriyaki chicken, potato salad & baked beans! I need to make some of that yummy pasta salad. I love summer and can't wait to get to our local farmer's market!

Well now I'm going to have to run out for some corn! :-) If you were a southern girl, you'd have to throw in a tomato pie too. Oh, my, I'm adding tomatoes to the grocery list! Enjoy your day!

Which CSA do you share in? We loved our years of organic farm shares, but they are no longer doing a CSA! I really liked that they harvested what was most ready and we prepared and ate what was ripest each week. We now prebuy from a farmer who comes to the markets Weds and Sat, but it's quite not the same as having the kids run around the farm and see everything growing...

First, you are an inspiration to me in blog-land...your dedication to writing and creativity.
When my daughter was small, I also made many of her clothes, as well as quilts. I was home with her and it was a natural extension of my days. Good for you that you are able to be home with the wee ones and teach them. I am a teacher in a public school, and totally understand your position of learning. I daily am a lone teacher pushing upstream against what I am told I need to teach and what I know is best for the children. I love Waldorf philosophy, started a nature area as well as a garden at my school, teach my students how to sew, crochet, and knit, incorporate art and storytelling into my classroom.
In fresh foods, I have my own raised bed (4' by 44') full of wonderful vegetables, yet it is still not big enough to give us the variety I like, so we also subscribe to a local CSA. I am in California (much milder climate than where you are)...my garden already has many tomatoes, lettuce, chard, spinach, peppers, squash, fresh herbs, peas, and beans--all of which I have been preparing for weeks now in the kitchen.
Keep creating!

Ooh you're luck to live by a CSA! I'm so happy summer is here -- and isn't it so much better with kids?! :) Happy day to you!

sounds like a great evening together. these things say summer for sure - look at that grilled corn. we were supposed to get our first CSA share yesterday but i think the recent dip in temperature had them push it back a week or so. total anticipation. glad to hear you are already getting into the swing of dining outdoors.

Is there anything more orgasmic than fresh New England corn on the cob w/ butter?
I think not!

yum yum yum! we have had to dive in with a bit of non-local, non-organic (probably GMO) corn, too. ;) shame, shame! (lol) but, oh was it delicious!

I just had some last night also from the grill. Oh how I love this time of year and the foods it brings.

I knew there had to be some deeper reason I am drawn to read your blog - CSA! I am a farmer and we operate a 60 member CSA. There is just something different about people who believe in eating this way. I am a bit envious though, we live in Wyoming so there aren't any berries on our produce list.

Mmm ... that is looking so nice. Grilled corn, I can almost feel how it smells. And grilled meat, delicate salads, watermelon. That is summer for me. The absolute most beautiful season.

ditto... big cold salads, corn on the cob, watermelon, ice cream cones, oh and of course... gazpacho.... yum.... is it the season yet? that all of the sudden sounds sooo good to me!!

Corn on the cob cooked on the grill is my favourite. My bf is Indian and I'm Cajun, so if you like to spice it up you can try this. Before serving take a half of a lime, dip it in a salt and cayenne pepper mixture (you determine the intensity) and rub on the corn squeezing slightly. My favourite corn ever!

we're growing corn for the first time in our garden this year--those little seedlings can't grow fast enough!

I missed out on our local CSA (just learned about it) but hope to still snag local produce at the nearby markets. Corn on the cob...yum!

Oh, it sounds so wonderful! Here in the Pacific Northwes we're still doing on and off rain. And more rain! Meanwhile, I love those gorgeous jadeite salt & pepper shakers. I've been wanting some of those! ~A :-)
