I heart film #2
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm (and preorders!) for the book!! Oh, it is so fun to share this journey with you here. I'm very eagerly - and as patiently as I can - awaiting March 11th when I can actually hold it in my hands. Until the book has it's own website (must figure that out soon!), you'll find book news and a link to the Amazon pre-order page sitting quietly over there in the right sidebar.
Last week on our little vacation (which ended up being more home-bound than originally planned, but when 'home' means the beach? There was little complaining.), I continued my little love affair with film. I brought the camera along with us on our fourth of July beach visit. Every shot in the roll was overexposed or otherwise funky technically. But I don't care - every single one makes me so happy. I can't stop fussing over the magic of film, especially when it's not my 'everyday' method of taking pictures. There's so much I love about it - the one chance, the waiting, even the sound of the clicking camera. Anyway...here are a few of my favorites. A few more are on Flickr in my film set, if I haven't over saturated you with beach photographs yet (oh, there are still months yet to go!).
Happy Monday, friends. It's nice to be back!

Oh. Absolute stunners. All of you! Is that hubby playing with the kids in the last shot? What a great big teddy bear that one is. Love it...

You just can't beat a holiday by the seaside, beside the sea!

Glad you are back, I missed you (need something to brighten up my days at the moment and you are the best to do this "job"). And I love the photos, especially that of Adelaide. It looks so artsy :-)

What beautiful pictures! I have always loved old cameras. You never know what moments you have captured til you get them developed.

The tone in these is so vintage. Love them.

Your blog has been part of my daily reading for some time and i too am anxiously awaiting the book. In fact now at this wee hour, is a good time to preorder.

Posted by: emily | July 09, 2007 at 08:35 AM
great pictures. you've totally inspired me to go back to the film camera- and to finally learn how to use my mom's old manual canon. beautiful!

OMG, Amanda, I could just weep at how beautiful these photos are. Your children are profoundly lucky to be encircled with such love, creativity, and commitment. And of course, you are lucky that the universe sent them to you. ;-)

Oh! They are beautiful! I especially love the one of you and your babes together. So glad to have you back, I missed having my mourning Soule fix!

I love the feel of these photos. Film is so much more expressive than digital, it has a depth and a warmth - and you are using these features so perfectly to capture your days. The top one looks like a postcard you'd find in an old box, buried in someones attic or second-hand store.

So lovely and amazing... all of it!
Posted by: Heather | July 09, 2007 at 09:59 AM
I've always loved your pictures, and the film ones have a lovely quality that is difficult to describe. You must have a lot of patience (and talent) to fiddle with all the little details that go into it!
And your family is SO cute! The ones of Adelaide are especially great! Her bathing suite is quite sassy.
Great to have you back!

It's funny; I haven't thought much about the different properties of film v. digital until you posted your film results. It makes me want to go grab out my ancient Canon that I inherited from my mom, who got it when she graduated college in 1978. I love that camera. There's something so personal about taking pictures with it. Thanks for the inspiration, and hearty congrats on your book!

Thanks for posting such fun photos of the beach. I remember when digital first came out it was so easy to spot the differences. Now I'm so used to everything being digital that I've forgotten all the great qualities of film.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures Amanda. Just last night I was thinking about the clicking sound of a 'real' camera and how much I love that noise. Funny, it seemed such a personal thing it's touching to feel it's shared. Reading your blog is one of the little beautiful things which illuminate my life and help remind me why I'm so lucky to be at home with my own little one enjoying the journey she's taking me on. Thank you.

OK, I have a question (before I head out on a camping trip in one hour. gotta read some blogs first!) How come all of your film photos turn out with such marvelous "grain" to them, whereas all the film shots we took on our previous (SLR) film camera just look like regular old pictures?
Posted by: Grace | July 09, 2007 at 11:48 AM
PS: I have a Canon 400D (Digital Rebel XTi) which tries to imitate that satisfying click sound of a film camera, which was quite disconcerting when I got it, and now it's just funny.

love your film shots - so good.

these are gorgeous!

Welcome back... beautiful photos!
Posted by: Julie | July 09, 2007 at 12:35 PM
i love the colors on these! yay film!!
Posted by: hannah | July 09, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Grace - I used a really low speed film. 200 ISO. Also, the camera is super old - it was Steve's grandfather's. I bet there's plenty of dirt in there helping out the grain factor. ;)

Beautiful shots I love them all.
Posted by: Rhian | July 09, 2007 at 01:46 PM
oh...the beauty of film. i still love it. wish i could use it more. did you do any postprocessing on those? because the colors are fantastic.
Posted by: katie | July 09, 2007 at 01:54 PM
Thank you, Katie! No post processing - the prints were just scanned and then resized. I have no idea why (perhaps that they're all slightly overexposed?), but the colors are uniform throughout the set. I *love* that.
Posted by: SOULEMAMA | July 09, 2007 at 01:57 PM
i lOVE the rich, muted colors in these. And the content is fabulous!
Posted by: erinvega | July 09, 2007 at 02:45 PM
i've been thinking of bringing out my old film camera since your last film post - but i've been so spoiled by the ability to take oodles of photos on my digital camera that i'm almost worried about having only one shot at each shot (so to speak). but your post today has given me courage - you say that these are all overexposed or somehow technically off, but they're all so lovely - really, so expressive and marvelous to look at. so i think i might break out the film just to see what can happen. thanks for the inspiration.

Welcome back! I missed your posts. They've become an important part of my day.

Love the colours in these pics. The've got an authentic nostalgic wash that can only come with an old camera. Beautiful.

speaking of a lot of love in a family...
I especially like the one of you with the kiddos and the one of adelaide in the sand (beautiful colors in that one).

Hi Amanda,
Congratulations on the book. If you need help with the website, let me know :-)
Posted by: Adriana | July 09, 2007 at 08:48 PM
Gosh, there really is something so very different about film, isn't there? And it's amazing, and irreplaceable, in my opinion. If it wasn't for the cost factor, I think I'd stick with my old camera, the one I dropped once in the garage and once on a bridge in Venice, and then duct-taped together - but it still works!
Thanks for the pictures, I especially love the one of the baby's head!
Posted by: Michelle | July 09, 2007 at 09:33 PM
beautiful! i love film also and you make me want to dust my camera and start shooting again.

Welcome back!
and ps: I note your book is being offered as a pair with 'bend the rules sewing' - nice!
