what i love :: backyard blankets, and what goes on them

Often, just as fun as a summer outing to the beach, is the everyday kind of outing to the backyard. The kind of lazy summer afternoons that involve: chapter after swing/snack/sandbox/bike ride-interrupted-chapter of what is surely our most-read family book (thank you dear Amy and family for this beautiful Lizbeth Zwerger version); blocks brought outside to construct a log cabin 'for gram to live in right next to our house'; dolls brought out to nap in the sun, but only after a little lullabye; and the ultimate treat of the first of the backyard blueberry season.
Oh, yes. This is good.

i think i'm just going to pop back over here throughout the day to gaze and smile at the picture of adelaide loving her babes, in jewels of course.

Yes, yes ~ love the picture of Adelaide loving the babies. My kids don't know the story of the Wizard of Oz yet and that looks like a perfect book to introduce it. Will have to get my hands on it! Have a good day!

Any time you post about the Wizard of Oz it makes me laugh..for fancy dress one year (many moons ago) I was THE yellow brick road. I had a fantastic 80's dress that was yellow-er than yellow, long sleeved, puffed at the waist, knee length(what was I thinking!)..and yellow tights. I used yellow face paint for any skin showing..and wore a traffic cone on my head. My enthusiasm knew no bounds..and I remember drawing the brick pattern on the dress and tights. It was a good night...oh! the memories!! Our kids love the Wizard and are gutted I didn't keep the dress!

Ah yes, blueberries! Our house too. A late congrats on your new book in the works (!) - so much I miss while I'm on vacation. And what a pleasant surprise to open up the PP Herald the other day and see your sweet family.

love the babes under the blanket.

Nothing beats that!

One word: enchanting!!

What a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon!

There is nothing I love more than a nakey baby dripping jewels...cutest thing ever!

What a great picture of Adelaide - so cute. I have serious garden envy thinking about those blueberries (my absolutely favourite fruit) and your great summer weather - it's raining in Paris boo hoo. Congratulations for the second book too!

That picture of your babe.. awwww, so cute! I love her jewels. :) And wow, blueberries in the backyard? I have to drive miles to purchase them.. LOL.. The benefits of living back East I am sure. Lovely post, Amanda!

Yes, summer is soooo good! I've been taking a bit of a break from the computer this summer, reminding myself to enjoy my kiddos and all that summer brings. So glad that you're having a lovely summer. Your quilt for E was fantastic and I'm glad that his run in with bees turned out o.k. Have fun putting together that 2nd book!

It's 100 degrees here, and too miserable to be outside in the daytime. I'm jealous!

oh, i love that neck with pretty beads. kisses kisses kisses. (and lullabyes.)

That blanket just SCREAMS summer fun!! I love it!

Isn't it great? If I could, I think that I would just live in this summer forever! My kids are the same ages as yours (all girls) and we have been doing the "backyard/beach/snacks for dinner" stuff too...being a stay at home mom is the best job ever!

Is that a teething necklace? Does it work? I'm skeptical (I don't understand HOW it would work) but it seems like lots of people love them.

What a difference climate makes. We are out in the heat much of the day (will be 100 degrees today) but only to work on the farm or as a transition to get to the next cool spot. I so loved my one summer in Maine. Bliss. That picture of Adelaide with her dolls is one of my favorites ever!

We have the freezer stocked with nearly 30lbs. of local berries. I feel a blueberry buckle will be in our future!
You have a lovely family.

Oooh I love that version of the Wizard of Oz illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger.

mmmh, blueberries!

haven't commented in ages, but just checking in to say:

1. this could be the scene at our house, any day this past summer. my boy's poops are pure blueberry, at the moment!

and

2. if we were neighbors, we could have one rockin' picnic together, i assume :)

happy rainy day!

I love her little necklace!

summer i love you. i love adelaide's necklace too!

I love the original Baum story - SO good! I loved the whole series in fact - have you read the others? I always read them in the summer - when I think of them I think of heat bugs buzzing. Oooh - now I want to read them all again!

Oh, Miss A is so sweet with her babies! So cute!

Pics like this make me wish I lived in Maine instead of Dante's Inferno aka Phoenix. Le sigh. Don't you love those KK sippy cups? We have one for my daughter and my dh and I use larger ones everyday too.

Love your blog so much even though I don't comment everyday. :)

What an idyllic scene :) We are loving the blueberries here, too - blueberry poops, not so much fun.

Just found your blog - lovely, and congrats on the book!

Becky

Love the picture of Adelaide and the dolls! Is she teething again, hence the necklace?

Ahh I keep seeing those fresh blueberries and I want to eat them off the screen! You babies look so fulfilled :)

o, and the tenderness of Adelaide's hands on her dolly...how dear, just have to wonder what she was telling her! xoC

I wish I were in your backyard playing on that blanket too!

A~Is there anything better than summertime? I love outdoor-living!
I wish Utah had a blueberry season! Those look so yummy!
Love and light to you

Congrats on the book and I love the pictures of you guys having fun in the backyard! I especially love how Adelaide looks like she's having a conversation with her doll :) I drew strength from your emergency room story when I had to take lil' Robby to the emergency room, all is well, and it helps me to know that other moms go through it too and all these cuts/bumps/bruises are just part of growing up! Also, I noticed Adelaide has an amber teething necklace, how is that working for you guys?

SouleMama, I love your blog--sorry I haven't commented earlier, but I do check in daily. I love what's going on over there. I've seen those amber teething beads too, at Nova Naturals I think. So do they work? Or just pretty? My little teether has gotten three teeth in about three weeks. Oh, and I'm so excited about both of your upcoming books. I've already pre-ordered over at Amazon for your first and am anxiously awaiting both.

I love how your little girl wears her beads. So sweet and pretty as she sings her babies to sleep. Looks like a perfect day.

To everyone asking about the beads - yes! Those are amber teething beads. Adelaide loves her beads, and I do think they help with teething - they're smooth and cool and must feel so good on those little sore gums. I bought mine from novanatural.com. And she thinks they're pretty too. ;)

I'll second that!

The boys look so tan...a sure sign of a summer spent out-of-doors.

how precious. yummy blueberries!

You really look to live in the most amazing part of the world - the resources that seem to be just on your doorstep are completely enviable. Having said that, so too is the way that you make the most of everything around you.

I'm right with you. There is nothing better than a blanket spread out on the grass.

I love that picture with the baby and the doll.
