on a date
I've got a special date with my five year old birthday boy in the city for the weekend. His essentials are packed and ready to go - namely, a hat for the drive down, and a hat to wear to the concert. It'll be just the two of us - a rare treat - and we're both very excited about the whole thing. (The negotiations for music in the car have already begun. Right now it's The Clash vs. Gillian Welch. Hmn...someone's going to have to budge.)
We'll be at Rock-n-Romp tomorrow (Saturday) - signing books and, well, rocking and romping, of course!
More details on the event here.
3pm
Great Scott - Allston, MA
(Harvard Book Store will have copies of the book for sale at the show)
I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in Boston!

We had a special birthday this week, too!
Have fun with your new five-year-old! Five was a fantastic age, I thought.

I stumbled onto your blog this afternoon. What gorgeous pictures! I hope you and your son have a wonderful time.

you must tell me where you get all the amazing hats. there was a fedora, i believe, in a previous post that just slayed me. my son really needs to have something similar. he's into vests and dressing up for special occasions, a selection of fancy hats would make his day! just the perfect thing for his upcoming fifth birthday (i swear, five? he just can't be five. i'm sure that you can sympathize.)

Ezra is my kind of kid. Those hats are fabulous.
I love that you are having a special weekend with just one of your kids. I bet he'll remember it always. Have fun!

Oh what fun! He seems like such a special little guy, enjoy him now, they grow so fast. My oldest will be 20 this year and is still as sweet as she was at five, but now is as tall as me-time has FLOWN by! Your book came in the mail yesterday and I LOVE it already. I wish I could meet up with you at one of your events, but sadly I am thousands of miles away. Always next time! Have a wonderful and relaxing time! :)

You two have a great time! Like you,I also think that it is so important for children to have one on one time! I say mix up the music-we have Sirius radio because we travel a lot and we always go back and forth between the punk station and coffee shop station!

I really need to do this with my 5 year old. Really great idea, but then, that is why you have a book! I wish we were still in Boston so we could come too! And those hats just made Ezra my favorite young man!

How very exciting is must be for your special five-year old to accompany you on this special event! Another memory to treasure. Have fun in Boston.
I must tell you, after hearing it from so many of my friends, and then reading your post about 'Lost' I finally broke down and started watching the series from Netflix... And wound up staying up past 2 AM last night because I couldn't stop!!! So addictive...

LOVE the hats! Happy Birthday to Ezra!!! Just got your book and can't wait to read it. You are such an inspiration. I check in with your blog, well, everyday, and then whenever I need a little grounding in my hectic L.A. life! Thanks so much for putting yourself out there. Have a wonderful date with your boy.

What a fun birthday trip! Good luck with your book signing. I just got the book from Amazon last night and read it as long as I could stay awake. I have to say that the price was more than reasonable considering the quality of the book. It almost feels like I got away with something. Very inspirational...thank you!

I'm so happy for Ezra. He's having mama all for himself. That IS precious.

*gasp* I have that same suitcase! It was my mother's and it stores her Terri Lee doll and her wonderful accessories. That was my favorite item when I was little.
Have a great trip!

It was so great to finally meet you, and Ezra! I've read your words and even heard your voice, but in person it is still so much nicer. Thank you for coming all the way to Allston!

I, too, have an Ezra that will be 5 in 3 weeks. I wish we didn't live on opposite sides of the country because I think our Ezra's would love eachother. My Ezra is all about Birds. Drawing, talking about, reading about, making bird calls and making up get bird stories. And playing and making music. I just got your book and I am so inspired. Thank you.

I have been waiting rather impatiently for a rather special delivery - you book has been winding it’s away across land and sea. It has finally ended its long journey and made it to my little home near the sea here in Australia. Thank you for writing such a beautiful book - it really is a treasure.

I know how it is. Why not compromise with a little Wilco?! "Sky Blue Sky" is a favorite around here with everyone, and sounds especially great in the car! ;O)
Hope your trip was super, did Ezra sign copies too? Been reading a borrowed copy of the book, and I am enjoying it very much. Thank you for the inspiriation.

ps. I'm rooting for Gillian!

LOL re: Clash v Gillian.
I have similar battles with my 5 year old. With us it's the the industrial metal channel (XM) versus folk. I always win though. The loud stuff is reserved for 'daddy time'. Too many guitar solos makes my head hurt.
Posted by: HandyCraftyWoman | April 13, 2008 at 03:34 AM
There's something terribly cool about a 5-year-old who loves The Clash. Although I, like you, prefer Gillian Welch in the car.

I took myself to the bookstore on Friday evening. Alone, in the lush aisles of all those thoughts and ideas, catalogued and bound and festooned in lovely dust jackets. I absolutely LOVE bookstores...and to be there alone for a few minutes was heaven. I had gone to pick up a copy of your book, which was sadly not in yet. They assured me that it is on order and should be there in the next 2 weeks...which means, I shall have to venture out to the bookstore once more. *sigh*

Guess what I received today? My mail order copy of Creative Family.
I wonder if I am the first in Australia to get a copy?
Anyway, can't waot to get home from work and have a good read and get inspired.

Lucky kiddo. And lucky mama, for that matter. Here's a belated vote for The Clash. : )

I have the same suitcase but with a different monogram, of course. It belonged to my great aunt.
I enjoy your blog- My kids are a bit older now (17, 15, and 10) but it brings me back to our days in Vermont with my husband in graduate school and us (2 older kids and myself) homeschooling and hanging out with a great group of moms and kids. Priceless memories.
