SouleMama: How do you come up with new designs and ideas?
Holly: I'm a bit of a hummingbird when it comes to image making because I'm influenced by so many different things. I love patterns and I find them in everything I see. Living in the Virginia countryside, surrounded by woods and fields, taking long walks and observing the tiny details in nature, the change in seasons, the cycle of life is a huge outward influence. More reflective ideas come from music and pop culture, reading countless novels, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Psalms, biographies, art monographs and all sorts of peculiar books. It all jumbles together to shape my imagery.
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job?
Holly: Painting is my favorite part of my job, which to me, is not a job at all. I love owning my own business and I enjoy all aspects of it from creating, to sharing it with others, even the packing and shipping. I love looking at the addresses of my customers and imagining where these works will live and how they will be enjoyed. I know how much I treasure collecting art and so it makes me so happy and so grateful that my work adorns walls in homes all over the world.
SouleMama: How do you keep yourself motivated, and avoid burnout?
Holly : I'm
inspired and motivated most of the time. Taking a break from work is
hard because
I don't think I'm working. I'm just doing what I love. The truth is
that there aren't enough hours in the day to execute
all of my ideas. My head is always full. My mind is always wandering.
My hands don't exactly keep up. I wish I could work faster, yet it's not
really a race. The challenge for me is not losing a thought or an idea
and the moment of excitement that comes with it.
SouleMama: D o you have a favorite inspirational quote?
Holly: I think it was Oscar Wilde who said, "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken."
and Dr. Seuss, "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than
You.”
and my dear
parents, "Follow your bliss."
