SouleMama: What inspires you?
Kate: I always do a quick scratchy drawing of an item before I make it, but I've recently decided to start investing more energy into those sketches. With a fine arts degree in my background, I have decided to brush of the dust from my old sketchbooks and paints. When I draw a real figure wearing a real garment, with color and light and texture, I find I am more inspired to make it. Because in a way, it is already real. I can see it more clearly in my head and I think the finished product, the actual garment, benefits from this investment. It used to feel like it was time I couldn't afford to spend, but it's now starting to feel like something a can't afford NOT to do. Investing in myself and my work comes back tenfold too, especially when the whole family is sprawled out on the family room floor in front of the fire with all our papers, paints and pencils. Absolute bliss. Times ten.
SouleMama: What's the product or offering that you are most excited about in your shop/class right now? Tell us about it.
Kate: All my Organic Merino Wool Interlock garments are now being sold pre-washed, or felted, for the thickest and warmest layer around. The extra warmth is now built into the pricing so you know you're getting the best you can with each purchase. All natural, very warm, and oh so soft. And as for my newest garment, with all this talk of dressing in layers and natural fibers and walking the walk, I honestly can't believe I haven't made ORGANIC COTTON UNDERWEAR before now. Within the coming weeks I'll be posting a cami to go with the new undies, too. I have so many great colors why not have some fun with them, while knowing you're treating your body right. It's the base layer, right next to your skin, and it can make or break how you feel about yourself in a day.
SouleMama: How are your children incorporated into your business?
Kate: My son sees me working in my studio every day. It is a wonderful thing for us both. I get to teach him that doing what you love can be fun and inspiring, but sometimes hectic and consuming. He gets to teach me that taking a break from work can give you just what you need to be able to return to it. He learns what hard work and dedication can bring to a business, he sees what passion can do for a work day, he absorbs the ever presence of creativity in our household. With a graphic designer for a father and a clothing designer for a mother, he knows that it is possible to create the world around you. It is our gift to him.
