SouleMama: Tell us about your background. what path led you to the work you do today?
Tom: I was raised to deeply appreciate nature. But beginning in high school I realized that appreciation wasn't nearly enough. Through agriculture we have our greatest impact on the earth and unfortunately these days, it is mostly a negative impact. It is not a given that we will just figure out how to live in balance with this beautiful planet. We need new ways of thinking and acting and we need new tools. Seeds are the first step in either the destruction or regeneration of our land, soil, air and bodies. I started High Mowing in order to spread the message and tools of deep food system change that I believe will do nothing less than lead us toward the abundant and healthy future that is waiting for us.
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job? the most challenging?
Tom: I have always loved working with great people and right now at High Mowing, there is such a wonderful bunch of folks. They are dedicated, passionate, smart and super fun. My favorite part is getting to work with them everyday. As we have grown since the start of my little seed saving hobby in 1996, my job has had to constantly change. In that time I have also gotten married and had two children and my parents have gotten old. Balancing the changing roles in my life certainly is a challenge, but it is also very stimulating and pushes me in all sorts of important ways. I think that staying still would be worse.
SouleMama: Tell us about your customers.
Tom: It is a huge honor to serve our customers. They are gardeners and farmers that are on the frontlines of changing the way people think about food and farming. They are the families that are raising their kids in the garden and teaching them about where food comes from and why they should care. We provide this small but powerful first ingredient that allows so much to happen. This year, over a million hands held our seeds and planted them in the ground - that inspires the heck out of me.
