While it's not exactly footloose and global travels, I'd say this is as close to my perfect idea jet set as I'd like to get right now. From a rustic cabin on a lake in New Hampshire to a campground in the woods of Maine. From Squam to Common Ground - long, full and good days - this is quite unlike any kind of rhythm or pace I - or my family - is used to. But we're rolling with it. I'm home just long enough to wash a load of laundry, but not to unpack. Swooping in to snuggle up my babes and relieve Papa for a minute, but trying not to upset the rhythm and groove they've got going when I'm not here. Popping into the garden to make dinner, but ignoring - for now - the other work to be done here.
It's been a special treat to bring home with me, on this quick sweep through, some friends. Friends who don't mind 'winging' dinner with me by a quick stroll through the garden. Friends who love and value home and family life as much as I do. Friends who jump in to read a chapter (or six) while Mama reads another little one to sleep. Friends who gather acorns and make nutkins while Mama does a little laundry. Good, good people, I tell you, Stephanie and Phoebe. And my little ones all believe themselves to have two new best friends this week.
It sounds absolutely silly and perfectly obvious to say, but goodness, I do love Home. I am happy to be here right now - sweeping my kitchen floor (I kinda really love that), enjoying the first fire of the season (last night!), and soaking up that gorgeous light that only comes in September.
