Today, we bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor, Specks & Keepings. In Hillery's words:
"Specks & Keepings is a small shop filled with fine handmade objects and design. It is a showcase of thoughtfully made goods that aim to inspire a simple lifestyle that is carefully shaped and chosen. At Specks & Keepings we value a sense of connection to the people who make the things we surround ourselves with. We believe in special goods that age with us.
We also have a blog, that we think of as a visual diary."
SouleMama: Tell us about your background. What path led you to the work you do today...
Hillery: My mother, Debra Weiss, and I have worked together for over 14 years. My mother received her degree in Textile Design many years before I was born, but didn’t begin her career as a designer until I was 15 years old. Growing up she inspired and encouraged me to make things with my own hands. In 2000 we launched Rebe together, which began as a small handbag company that soon grew to include women’s apparel. Today Rebe is synonymous with
fine design, beautiful textiles, and skillfully made wearables for women of all ages.
As Rebe grew I left home to study fine art at the Maryland Institute College of Art where I received my BFA in 2007. I have been working on my own art practice ever since. In 2011, I launched Specks & Keepings as a way to reach customers far and wide. I believe in the beauty of a life filled with fine handmade goods, and I hope to share the work of artists I admire with people from all over the globe.
Today my mother remains the sole designer of Rebe, affording us both the freedom to make our own art while continuing to work with each other in many other ways. Together we keep Specks & Keepings running smoothly, we travel throughout the country showcasing our work at craft markets, and we continue to inspire one another daily. My dream would be to keep doing what we are doing for many more years to come.
SouleMama: What role does 'handmade' and ‘craft’ play in our society?
Hillery: I believe the idea of ‘handmade’ and ‘craft’ varies from person to person. Contemporary craft culture seems to support two rather different ideas of Craft: Fine Craft, which is steeped in tradition, history, and skill and Do-It-Yourself Craft, which empowers people of all ages to make things with their own hands, embracing their creativity as a force for change big and small.
At Specks & Keepings we are interested in the idea of a slow craft movement; a bit like the slow food movement. We are drawn to artisans whose work takes time, cultivated skill, and an intimate knowledge of process. In an effort to honor both the craftsmen and the work, we feel that the history of the craft and the process are just as important as the finished product.
SouleMama: Tell us about your customers.
Hillery: We have wonderful customers. They are a large part of why we do what we do. The majority of our customers are women who range in age from early 20’s to late 70‘s. Most of our customers have a deep appreciation for handmade goods and the work we are doing at Specks & Keepings. They are kind, patient and open.
Debra and I are often pleasantly surprised by the individuality of our customers, and never cease to be excited by how beautifully our customers wear their new garments, shoes, or accessories. A large part of our practice in running Specks & Keepings, is to make each and every person who shops with us leave feeling beautiful and happy. We believe in the positive impact of good design, thoughtfully made products, and excellent customer service.
