I will confess that in the deep, cold, darkness of winter I was a little uncertain about this purple when our designer first presented it. I wondered... Is it earthy enough? Isn't it too garish? Nope, nope, nope! It's perfect! And when advance copies arrived at my house on the very same day that the lilacs opened up, well, that's when I realized she was a genius, really (thank you, Caitlin!). Of course, that purple only serves as an accent to all the other goodness that's inside the pages. And there is so much goodness in this issue...
There are a few theme words that have been total dream words, so to speak, for our contributors. Words that are so fitting for our community that putting the issue together almost happens by itself, working with such rich and varied material. BREAD was one. SEED another. MEND for sure. And PRESERVE? Yes, indeed. Another pleasant breeze and I think it shows in the end and in all the goodness inside the pages - using foraged "weeds" to heal, cheesemaking for kids, arm knitting, woolworking, seed saving, oh and all the creative recipes too! Such good stuff.
We've been having fun with extras too - like the tear-out double coloring sheets inside each issue now. And with this particular issue, crafty paper for you to tear out and use in all kinds of projects (see the magazine for some ideas and our website for more to come!). And in our shop with this issue, you can find a full PRESERVE Craft Pack we designed for all your crafty dreams (mason jar washi tape, yes please!). Oh, and for more shop fun, stay tuned for our next pop-up shop, coming June 20th full of Preserve-themed handmade goods (be sure to sign up for our mailing list to get notification of when that goes live).
Thanks, as always, for your support of this magazine adventure we're on. It's a true testament to your support and encouragement that, five years in, we are going strong - adding more content with each issue, and staying free from the distraction of advertising. Thank you! Gathering and sharing stories and skills in these pages is an honor and a joy (and if you think you have a story to share with us, do check out our submissions page, where we've just announced our 2017 issue themes!).
You can find Issue 18::PRESERVE in our shop now, at your favorite stockist, or in your mailbox if you're a subscriber!
