For breakfast on Saturday we had apple pie. Not just any apple pie, but the very last apple pie of the 2008 harvest season.
Last fall, in my near-baby-nesting-harvesting frenzy, a whole lot of pie filling was frozen. And oh, we have enjoyed that pie all year long. I spaced them out carefully - we've had them on birthdays and special celebrations and sometimes 'just because.' Saturday's was the last. We loved it, we savored it, and we started talking excitedly about the upcoming season of apples. And apple pies, tights, cardigans, crunchy leaves, the Common Ground Fair, woodstove fires ...and oh, autumn is always so lovely!
But...not yet. There is still much to be had of summer. Including two birthdays which most definitely count as 'summer birthdays' if you ask these Soule Virgo girls (she loves summer as much as her Mama). And speaking of which, I should let you in on this nutty little goal I've set for myself. The goal of finishing a quilt for my girl's birthday....in just 11 days.
I know, it's ambitious. It may even be over-the-top crazy, given all that fills our days right now. But I'm hopeful. She'll be four, and four is just so BIG, you know? So independent and aware. Big! And I can imagine nothing that I want to give her on this birthday more than something warm, cozy and handmade by Mama to cozy herself up in during the seasons to come. It's time for her quilt, and I think she's going to like it (don't worry, I have a plan to work in some purple).
Wish me luck. The clock is ticking and I've got a lot of quilt left to go. Oh, I wish I had an apple pie from the freezer to serve for dinner.
Hmnn...popcorn, anyone?
