Corners of my House
{Originally posted January 5, 2006}
I'm often disappointed after I've lived somewhere and then can't
remember the details of the space, or how we used it -- I hardly ever
photograph the nooks and crannies of a home. Not this time...in order
to preserve some of my favorite spots and the flood of memories I
treasure with them, I'm trying to photograph those spaces now, while
we're still really 'living' in them. I'll share them here on Thursdays
for a bit.
This is perhaps my favorite corner in our house. The playkitchen - a treasured first birthday gift for Calvin - was made possible (and all the more special) as a collective gift from many family members. Sooooo many hours have been logged cooking in that
kitchen. And climbing on that kitchen. We've had many a feast prepared
there by our children and others (this morning it was potato apple
soup. yum.), and I do hope for many more in the years to come. This
corner is also home to our calendar, the chalkboard of lists (I do love
my lists), and a board of favorite current photos. In the morning, the
sun shines the brightest right into that corner, and it's oh-so-warm. I
can sit at the nearby kitchen counter, drink tea, and watch the bakers
in action while they prepare my breakfast. Or sometimes, they'll be
cooking there alongside my own baking. It feels like a big part of the
pulse of our family resides right in this corner.

A Note Today:
Apparently this IS the universal week for Corners! So it was four years ago this week that Corners of My Home began, with this post above (the original post includes a description and invitation to join the group). With over 9,000 members now (and 81,000 photos!) the Corners Of My Home Flickr group is getting a bit of tidying of it's own these days, with the help of a new moderator (thank you, Van!). There is so much homey inspiration and beauty to be found on those pages!
And the play kitchen...well, clearly it's still in use (and an icebox was added!), as you saw yesterday. It is most decidedly the 'most played with toy' by my littles and all who visit. Though we bought ours about eight years ago (it's made by Maine-based Elves and Angels), I do know that it (and similar kitchens) are available through two of my lovely sponsors - Nova Natural and Bella Luna Toys.
I am so grateful for the way that blogging has shaped how I photograph. I am just so pleased that a daily stop to check in here has resulted sometimes in not only looking at something differently and savoring it, but also in preserving that memory and moment. I am grateful for the little photographic bits I have not only of my children, and how our days are spent, but of the spaces we love too.
Happy weekend, friends!
