Corie: 4 years already! We started out wanting to offer sewists an alternative for unique fabric and patterns. When we stumbled upon the high quality and colorful European Fabrics and the clever patterns of Farbenmix and Studio Tantrum we knew we’d found our niche. We continue that spirit today and are always on the look-out for amazing sewing supplies; over the years we have added Japanese textiles, quilting cottons and domestic knits.
We find that embellishing takes most projects from good to GREAT, therefore we are continually offer new and unique trims. Bias trim is a staple around here, not only for finishing a quilt, but it makes hemming a skirt or pants a breeze. The narrow ribbon from Europe can be added to any project to give it a punch of whimsy and iron-ons and embroidery are quick ways to add pizzazz.
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job? The most challenging?
Corie: The best part of this business is being surrounded by fabulous textiles as well as my 4 children and husband. My kids think it’s really cool to have a fabric shop in their home and are some of my biggest promoters; they are always telling people about it and encouraging other moms to sew for their own children. I love the flexibility that working from home allows; one minute helping a customer find just the right item for their project, bouncing over to the school lunchroom to help out, and back again. I’ve become quite the early riser, it’s common to find me answering emails and doing editing at 4 in the morning. The quite of the house at that time, along with a cup of coffee, provide a great start to the day!
It can be challenging to find enough time to keep up with my own personal projects, our project wishlist is long. The girls have definite opinions about what patterns they want to try and which fabrics to use for them. I am fortunate to have a husband that can sense when I need to take an extra bit of time to create and he’ll make sure I get a block of time, being able to immerse myself in a sewing project is definitely one of the “places” I go to recharge.
SouleMama:
What artists and crafters have inspired your work?
Corie: I am continually finding inspiration through my own children and our adventures. Outside of that, my “go to” Internet inspiration comes from the master “color mixer”, Nancy, whose designs are so unique and enjoyable for my girls to wear! The Kickundblick gallery also has so many creative sewists and of course flickr is filled with amazing images.
