SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Melanie: Modern Organic Fabrics is celebrating its one year anniversary this week!
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job? The most challenging?
Melanie: My favorite part of my job is ordering fabric! Really, who wouldn't love to shop for a living? And there are so many new fabrics in production - it's a really exciting time for organic cotton fabric! I also love making things with the fabric and I really love seeing what others have made. The most challenging part of my job is keeping books and records. Also, the technical website stuff. I much prefer the creative side of my business.
SouleMama: How has motherhood changed the work you do?
Melanie: Motherhood has made me realize the importance of what I do. Children are always watching and learning. I want to teach them that you should spend your time doing what you love (although, of course, those tasks that you don't love still need to be done!) But, in the bigger picture, I also want to promote green products and living. I want the earth to be cleaner for them and I want to be a part of promoting a cleaner, less-toxic world. I would love it if someday we wouldn't need to categorize agricultural products (including cotton) as organic or not because it will all be what we now call organic. I love being a part of that goal.
