Today, I bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor, Lineanongrata. In artist Julia's words:
"The Lineanongrata shop carries prints, originals, bookplates, postcards and pinback buttons, all made with my illustrations. The newest item is the 2011 calendar (12 cute and funny illustrations all about children and animals)."
"Over in my blog space I have just started the 'food for thought project', a fundraiser all about food. I ask readers to send me their one special family recipe (if possible with the story that makes the recipe so special). When I have enough recipes, I will illustrate them and make them into a cookbook (which I'd like to name 'food for thought'), posting part of it as a free pdf on the blog, but also printing 'real' books, which I will sell, giving the proceeds to a humanitarian organization that helps people in need. The direct link to that project."
SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Julia: I have been working as an illustrator for five years now, but on October 27th 2010 I started a whole new era! I am now officially a one-woman-enterprise in Germany, meaning I'll now owe taxes to the Germans and not to the French anymore. The whole story started really well when the tax agent asked me to multiply 800 by 3 and I was unable to do it. Fortunately for all involved, I am the proud owner of a calculator, so I hope everything will go smoothly from now on.
SouleMama: What's coming up next for you and your business?
Julia: As I mentioned when I talked about my blog, I've just started the 'food for thought' project. It's especially dear to me because I think we often treat the food we eat as something we can throw away without a second thought and the recipes we use as just another chic way to prepare the masses of food available to us. I belive though, that food is precious, the way we eat is almost a political statement today, and that recipes can transport stories and family history in a way that few other things can. That's why I ask readers to contribute their special recipe (everybody is invited to do so, I'd be very very happy to have lots of people participate), which I will then illustrate. The resulting cookbook will be used as a fundraiser, the proceeds going to an organization that helps to feed people in need.
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job? The most challenging?
Julia: What I like most about my job is the drawing and painting. I wish I could do that all day long. As you have already read, I am numerically challenged, so the business end of things is my least favorite part. Calculating prices, gains, losses, costs and whatever else there is to calculate is absolutely necessary but not what makes me jump out of bed with joy in the morning.
SouleMama: How do you avoid burnout and keep yourself motivated?
Julia: Twice a week I go to kickboxing practice and have someone box my nose, and four times a week I go running. This keeps me ballanced and helps me letting go of work and the problems I encounter in my professional life every so often.
