Today, I bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor, Rae Grant. In Rae's words:
"Rae Grant is a children’s book designer and author of several family activities books. She writes children’s books to encourage families to explore simple and classic childhood crafts and activities together.
I blog at My Little Hen, which I use as an inspiration journal for homemade fun. It helps me stay creative, explore ideas, and meet other bloggers who are interested in similar things for kids and themselves. I love to blog but I am a little shy personally so I try to write about myself as a mom/ person/artist in a way that I hope shares a common ground with visitors. You will never see my dirty kitchen dishes on my blog though I completely admire bloggers who can put it out there. Brave souls!"
SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Rae: I’ve been a bookmaker and a writer for many years, first starting out as a letterpress apprentice in a master shop in Hatfield Massachusetts. This shop made beautiful limited edition artists books and I fell in love with bookmaking. I set an entire children’s story that I wrote upside down and backwards in a metal composing stick using metal type pieces. It took me over a year to finish the book. That is where I learned to use my hands and become a craftsperson with bookmaking and print. Later, when I had a child, I went back to making children’s crafts from my childhood and delighted in the simplicity of the projects. My book ideas grew from my experience as a mom and from my own mid-western childhood too.
SouleMama: Tell us about your background. What path has led you to where you are today?
Rae: I am a creative person and most of my life has always centered around home and making things myself. As part of a large family of kids from the 70’s, we kids spent most of our spare time at home entertaining ourselves or we were out in our backyard and neighboring fields exploring and just doing things. The options kids have today are so different and I feel that a home-based environment is the healthiest and most fun for families. We bake, we make. That said, not all kids have this exposure at home so I’m taking this idea to the streets. I go into schools to talk with kids about making things themselves, and teach craft workshops to kids so they can learn how to make things on their own. It’s really fun!
SouleMama: What inspires you?
Rae: Children inspire me. They are beautiful, innocent, creative, and capable of seeing the world clearly and honestly. The spirit of childhood gives me a lot of hope and inspiration.
