SouleMama: How do you come up with new designs and ideas?
Sarah: I try to let go of my preconceptions and assumptions about how things are supposed to work and try instead to look at objects/images/situations with an open mind. When you let things have infinite potential, they tend to tell you what to make of them.
SouleMama: How do you avoid burnout and keep yourself motivated?
Sarah: No matter how interesting, creative or exciting a job may be, doing the same thing day-in and day-out can become tedious for anyone, which is why it is so important for me to change up my routine on a regular basis. Luckily, working on a family business affords this possibility in spades. Every day I get to wear many hats, and although some days it may feel like a millinery whirlwind, the mere fact that there is always something exciting and new to learn and experience keeps me pushing forward. It also doesn't hurt that my job requires me to spend most of my days trying to look at the world with the wonder and curiosity of a child... and really, who could ever tire of that?
SouleMama: Is there a special place that inspires you?
Sarah: I am often inspired by places and spaces, but their shape and location tends to move and change depending on where I am and what I am working on. Right now in this moment, the space I go to for inspiration is the landscape inside of music. As the days are getting shorter and darker and winter is slowly creeping in, I find myself exploring the hills and valleys of notes and the architecture of songs. From old ones that I've heard a million times but somehow seem different on each go around... to new ones that that I have to learn one phrase at a time until they become familiar friends. Every time I enter these spaces I come out revived, refreshed and many times, with a new perspective.
SouleMama: Do you have a favorite inspiration quote?
Sarah: Today it is: "Play is older than culture..." ~Johan Huizinga
