SouleMama: When and why did you start your business?
Suzy: I started Hip Mountain Mama in August 2008 as a way to offer the products I love to others as well as help with the family income. I had learned about so many great natural and reusable products and was inspired by many small family businesses that were producing these products. I decided that creating one place where people from all over could access these fine products would help promote these great products and the companies who make them. By staying true to this original idea things have just continued to grow.
SouleMama: Tell us what you envision and dream for the future of your business?
Suzy: My husband and I are now both working full time for the business and we are having a blast. My dream is that people continue to discover us and help us spread the word about eco friendly products and supporting small business. We have such a strong passion for eco friendly and reusable products and feel it is so important to do all we can spread the word.
SouleMama: Tell us about some new products you are excited about?
Suzy: We have recently added a lot of Handmade Fair Trade clothing and accessories for women. I am excited to be offering such cute and quality made skirts, shirts, pants, coats, and even bags. The companies we work with buy the clothing from women in India and Nepal who are making a fair living that helps them to contribute to their household income. While we love selling clothing that is handmade in America, it also feels good to know we are helping others improve their quality of life in other parts of the world. In 2011, we hope to expand our clothing line as well as bring in some more reusable products.
SouleMama: How does the balance of family and work play out for you?
Suzy: As a husband and wife team working out of our home, it is both wonderful and tough all at the same time. Communication and knowing when to walk away from a situation are the keys to our success. Sometimes we just need to drop everything and have family time, and other times either Andy or I need to step away from everything and have some alone time. Meditation, daily walks, and following our passions in life all help us maintain a fairly balanced lifestyle.
