Today, I bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor Magpie Patterns. In owner Amy's words:
"Magpie Patterns is an online pattern boutique where I’ve collected some of the loveliest knitting, sewing, embroidery and crochet patterns. With so many talented and creative designer contributing to the site, there’s always something new in stock.
You can follow along with the Magpie blog, Crafty Bird."
SouleMama: What inspired you to start your business?
Amy: Like a lot of crafters these days, I’m not solely devoted to knitting or sewing or embroidery. I love them all. But finding really lovely, unique and well designed patterns has always been a little tricky. At the very least it means going to many, many different sources or sifting through far more designs that I don’t particularly like to find the few that I love. That can be fun when you’re in a flea market mood, but when you’re not, it can be frustrating. Magpie Patterns is designed to showcase patterns that have already been selected for loveliness, uniqueness and great design, in one central location. Why not spend your time knitting, sewing, or stitching—rather than searching, searching, searching for that perfect pattern!
SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job? The most challenging?
Amy: The best part of my job is definitely the people I get to work with. My customers, the designers, the crafting community—everyone is so sweet, talented, and creative! Because I work from home and have three young, awesome-in-every-way, but busy kids, the most challenging part of my job is finding time for all I’d like to do. Like nearly everyone I know, my “to do” list is out of control, my office is a mess, and my head is often spinning with great ideas to tackle as soon as I get a second. I hear it’s all about finding balance, but I keep searching for more hours instead!
SouleMama: How does the balance of family and work play out for you?
Amy: One of the best things about my business is that my life as a mother and my life as a business owner can happily coexist. Before I started Magpie Patterns I was a public relations consultant for nonprofit organizations. I loved working for important causes and I met a lot of smart, dedicated people, but because of the nature of the work, my kids and my job were pretty much always at odds. Now I’m able to put my family first while pursuing the work that I love. Plus my kids serve as a great excuse to try out any number of the sweet patterns in the shop!
