Today, I bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor Mama K's Aromatic Play Clay. In Kari's words:
"Mama K makes sweet smelling naturally gluten-free play clay for everybody. We like to say we are soothing the creative beasts within."
You can follow along on the Mama K blog as well.
SouleMama: Tell us about the beginnings of your business.
Kari: This business started as the tiny seed of an idea that grew, as a lot of ideas at that time, from hanging out in the kitchen with my daughter. Every time my mind wandered back to it, I would notice it had grown a little. pretty soon I was getting goosebumps every time the words 'aromatherapy play dough' came into my mind. I knew then I had to try it or I would forever wonder what those chills had meant. A full on Play Clay forest, apparently!
SouleMama: What does a typical work day look like for you?
Kari: I wish I could say I was super organized and that my day went like this and like that and like this, but that is not how it is at all! We typically get up (the girls and I) after or right during my husband leaving for work. Then we have breakfast for a long time, draw some pictures and listen to some music. The whole time this is happening I plot my strategies for the day and covertly check my email. We are very lucky to have help for a few hours a week, so I do get some time to plan, make play clay and keep up with everything. It's not enough, but we are making it work...
SouleMama: How do you keep yourself motivated and avoid burnout?
Kari: This may sound funny, but I watch movies! Sometimes doing the work of crafting can be so monotonous and mind numbing. So I've found that if I put on a movie ( anything from art documentaries to modern flops) I can be present with the work and my mind doesn't wander off as much. I used to just listen to NPR, but I found myself getting teary several times a day. Not a good formula for working! I think the movie thing is pretty funny, because I realized that that was why my mom (there were 10 kids in the house) watched soap operas while she folded the laundry!
SouleMama: Tell us about your customers.
Kari: Mama K's customers are really really amazing people! I have been so heartened and touched by some of the feedback I've gotten. I think in business, there is such a huge learning curve, that sometimes it is only the encouragement of people who support you that keeps it going. It's nice to have an Etsy shop, actually, because that system of customer feedback is so immediate and gratifying.
