Today, I bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor Lineanongrata. In Julia's words:
"The Lineanongrata etsy shop sells serious, funny and quirky prints, pinback buttons and postcards of my original illustrations. The new spring line of prints is up so be sure to drop by and check them out."
"You can follow news and updates on the Lineanongrata blog. At the moment I'm travelling in India, so if you'd like to see photos and be part of the adventure, please feel free to visit. And coming soon, the Lineanongrata illustration eCourse!"
SouleMama: How do you come up with new designs and ideas?
Julia: Sometimes ideas just fall into my lap. When I walk the streets of Berlin, shop for groceries or read a book, ideas seem to just appear as if by magic. A conversation I overhear, a fleeting image I see out of the corner of my eye, and there is the idea for an illustration.
Other times it's hard to come up with an anything. Especially when I have to illustrate a text or a newspaper article, something that another person has written and that I have to illustrate. It's as though I had to combine two visions, the writer's and my own, into one illustration. I love the challenge and to this day have always been able to come up with something. But sometimes I need to look through other illustrator's work, catalogues, magazines, books and the all knowing, full of inspiration internet a good long while before an idea and an image form in my mind.
SouleMama: Do you have a favorite quote?
Julia: Today I read something very beautiful and very true: 'If you work with your hands, you're a laborer. If you work with your hands and your mind, you're a craftsman. If you work with your hands and your mind and your heart, you're an artist' - Saint Francis of Assisi
It's a lovely quote, isn't it? A knitter can be as much an artist as a painter, and a carpenter is as much an artist as an illustrator.
SouleMama: What's the offering you are most excited about right now in your shop? Tell us about it.
Julia: The Lineanongrata eCourse is the one thing I'm most excited about at the moment. In one of the Christmas fairs I did last year I met a young woman who asked me if I had ever considered teaching at University. And actually I had wondered off and on what it would be like to teach young designers and illustrators. Surely a good chance to review your own work process and learn something new with the students, I thought. A couple of days later the young lady called me up to see if I wanted to come to a job interview at one of Berlin's private Design Schools. What a question! Of course I wanted to, and lo and behold, I have a job as a teacher for illustration now.
When I announced this on the blog, many people told me that they would love to participate in the class and one of my readers actually asked if I had ever considered hosting an eCourse. I hadn't but looked into the matter. That's how the Lineanongrata illustration eCourse was born. You don't have to be an accomplished artist to participate, you don't even have to know how to draw. If stickfigures are the only thing you're comfortable with, we'll take it from there. I assure you there are some very easy ways to make your illustrations look more professional. Mostly though, the eCourse is about creating a community of people who want to share their artwork in a safe environment, learn new skills and enjoy creating images. Illustration is a joyful art and I would very much like to share that with you. If you're interested, please feel free to visit the FAQ at the Lineanongrata eCourse page.
