Last week, we got the early morning phone call from the post office we've been waiting for - our new chicks had arrived in town! Thirty girls (we presume) have joined us, now tilting the girl-to-boy ratio on this Soule homestead much heavier in the girl category (not that a certain five year old with three brothers is keeping score of such things with a tally sheet on her bedroom wall. Nope. Not at all).
Several months ago, when placing this order so very close to Steve's surgery, I wondered if I might have lost my mind adding one more task to my days at such an already "full" time for us. I went for it anyway, hoping that it might be just the welcome distraction my little ones would need after two weeks of lots of home time. Thank goodness, the latter has been true. Because the entertainment provided by thirty little birds? Oh goodness. It's for real.
Joining us (above, on the left) are fifteen Araucana (blue eggs!) for the family and fifteen (on the right) Rhode Island Red's belonging just to Calvin (my little entrepreneur with grand farm stand plans of his own).
Did I mention the entertainment factor? Yeah, this little corner of our (unfinished) kitchen laundry/bathroom is precisely where you can find all of my little ones these days. Watching, holding, giggling, and playing with the chicks. Day....or Night.
Happy Spring to you!
