SouleMama: Tell us about your background. What path led you to where you are today?
Amy: I come from a long line of crafty women. My grandmother ran a yarn shop out of her house (and could knit while reading!) and my mom sold handmade bears when I was young. So naturally I fell for domestic crafts with a particular fondness for knitting and sewing. But that feeling of potential, when a project is just an idea, or I'm looking for the perfect pattern—that's my absolute favorite part. Even more than when the project is completed! So when I looked around one day and realized that I had far more patterns than one women could ever complete in a lifetime, I dreamed up the idea for the pattern boutique. So now I get to search out the perfect patterns and share them with lots of other talented crafters, which is way more fun than hoarding them in my craft room!
SouleMama: What inspires you?
Amy: Color! Yarn, and fabric of course (I can't count how many times I've bought something delicious without any idea what I'd do with it!). I love to look at other people's projects, and although I haven't ever copied anything outright, I've definitely paid homage with my own spin at times. Sometimes something random inspires me, like a pattern in a gate or an illustration in a children's book!
SouleMama: Is there a special place that inspires you?
Amy: Before starting our family, my husband and I lived on a nature preserve on the Oregon Coast, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I was lucky enough to be a director at an art and ecology center tucked into the coastal woods with a phenomenal view of the ocean. We had a small cluster of rustic buildings where students would come to learn art and craft and where artists and writers would come to work for a few months. It was a place where the immense natural beauty inspired us to be richly creative. I still think of it that way, and go there to recharge and reconnect whenever I have the chance.
