SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Sarah: We have been a home based family run business for 17 years.
SouleMama: Tell us about your background. What path led you to the work you do today?
Sarah: Our oldest son Josh loved dress-up so we started to provide him with bits of fabric. He was also an "itchy" child, so silk was wonderful! Thus was born the "playsilk"; which has become a staple of waldorf classrooms and homes.
SouleMama: Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?
Sarah: "With time and patience, the mulberry leaf becomes a silk gown" - ancient Chinese saying.
I love this quote, as it reminds me that silk is a traditional fabric in China, and still requires many farmers to grow trees, tend the silk caterpillars, and hand sew the fabrics. Also, our family is half Chinese so it is part of our culture too.
SouleMama: How are your children incorporated into your business?
Sarah: Our three sons have grown up working in our business. Our oldest, Josh, now 21, makes our rainbow string games and cotton building cloths. Noah dyes silk and even Morgan, 11, prepares the silk for dyeing. As our business is on our home, our kid and friends kids have a great understanding of what makes a business work. It reminds me of olden times when families lived above their shops, and took on apprentices!
