SouleMama: Can you tell us about how you got started?
Jan: Life has a funny way of leading you to unexpected places. Looking at who I am now, what I'm up to and how I got here, it seems hard to believe that it all began with reading the April, 1970 issue of Look Magazine. It featured a photo of a baby and the lead story was about the first ever Earth Day.
Of course, all of the other articles were about related subjects- health, the environment and ecology (and what exactly did that word mean?). It completely altered the direction my life was heading in. Suddenly, everything changed. What I read, how we ate, what our goals were, even where we lived! We moved to the country, got goats, formed a food co-op and started learning how to DIY. Quite a big deal for a girl from mid-town Manhattan!
As time went by and children entered our lives, that opened up a whole new set of experiences, like natural childbirth (a rarity in the U.S. 40 years ago), home birth, breastfeeding, playgroups and alternative schools. And, my DIY experiments kicked into high gear with food related projects and making clothing for my kids. Frustrated by not being able to find the kind of products that I wanted for my kids, the path organically led me to starting my first business, a children's general store.
As I look at the road my business life has taken over years, I can see that what has determined my path has been pursuing what I was passionate about. I make things that I'm looking for, source things my family needs and support projects that create the kind of community and world I want for my family to live in. We are kindred spirits on this journey!
