SouleMama: What's your favorite part of your job?
Kate: I've mentioned before that my favorite part of the "job" is sourcing new products for the store. It's a never ending treasure hunt and I love it. Another aspect that makes my job fun and exciting is working and building ongoing relationships with "mom" bloggers. It's completely rewarding to watch their families grow up and know that we have been a part of their lives along the way. It's a great feeling when I get a glimpse into their daily life and recognize our products in their blog post photos - not necessarily as part of a review - but because these items are part of their everyday creative supplies. Seeing projects and drawings made with our crayons, paints, and pencils gives me a connection to these families and makes this job all the more special.
SouleMama: And the most challenging?
Kate: Over the last few years, we've struggled with the challenge of the economy (along with many other small businesses) but I have always forged ahead, adding new products and concentrating on our service. I've never really worried about competition because I have always felt that Stubby Pencil Studio is unique. Lately though, we have noticed more and more retailers (with much larger marketing budgets and resources to devote) starting to focus on eco-friendly products and actually stating that they'd like to duplicate our store. Although it's flattering (in a way) it's very scary to think of this major competition and how it will impact our future. I've never really focused on marketing - we have always grown by word of mouth and recommendations - and so marketing and creative ways to promote Stubby Pencil Studio will be my biggest challenge.
SouleMama: What's the product or offering you're most excited about in your shop right now? Tell us about it.
Kate: We have a bunch of new arrivals to the shop, but the one that my kids love most right now is the modeling clay. It is amazing! Feather light, flexible, and air dries without cracking. The kids play with it for hours - no kidding!
