SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Sarah: 18 years.
Sarah: I loved to play pretend when I was little. As a mom I watched my young son play and saw that he needed some cloths to create his outfits, forts, and "grass", "water", etc. so I gave him some silks. We named them playsilks, gave them to friends and soon began to sell them to a local shop. Soon many Waldorf schools heard about our little business and they started buying playsilks from us. We then began to make rainbow playsilks, capes, fairy skirts, wings and streamers. Over time we have designed many more toys and dress ups to encourage creative play.
SouleMama: What's the product or offering that you are most excited about in your shop/class right now? Tell us about it.
Sarah: Our pocket playsilks are the new product for 2012. They are versatile and fun. The pocket can be used for tooth fairy visits, as a belt to hold playsilks on or hold a sword and for horse reins. I just designed 3 new playsilk and silk scape color ways which will come out in Spring 2013, they are hand dyed blends of color. We are calling them blossom (pink/lavender), Sea (blue/green), and Fire (red/orange).
SouleMama: How does the balance of family and work play out for you? if applicable, how has motherhood/fatherhood affected the work you do?
Sarah: My husband, Mike and I blend family life with work life. Our three sons often work in the business. Our employees work from home mostly, and often when they do come into the home office space we have they bring their children with them. We find that moms working schedules around their children's lives is the happiest for them, and actually we are all much more productive and organized! I believe strongly that moms and children should not have to be separated!
