There's another snowy winter's day ahead today. I know for certain that means a few things will happen - there will be cross country skiing for some, there will be tea for all, and a game...or two or four will be played by quite likely every single one of us. Morning, noon and night, there's a whole lot of gaming happening around here. All year round, but most especially at this time of year where the coziest spot is right in front of the woodstove, and a game of Monopoly can stretch from lunchtime until the dinner bell.
So many different ages in this family, and interests that come and go (and then come back again) means that I try to keep the game cabinet a full and varied one. The classics mixed in with those more obscure plus some of my favorites - the handmades, of course. Our game cabinet got a bit of restocking over the holidays - some classics added to the bunch and some new to us treasures too. Just a few that are seeing a lot of play time right now:
Bird Bingo - A new one to us, the illustrations are just beautiful, and the game pieces of such a high quality that I think they'll stand up to some pretty heavy use here. I credit this game entirely with the reason all seven of us are sure to properly identify a blue footed booby should we ever come across one on the shore one day (you never know). It's Harper's favorite game right now.
Spaceopoly - Monopoly with a celestial twist!
Small World - The boys were introduced to world of Small World by some friends while on vacation last fall. Many, many hours were logged on that trip with all of them cooperatively and deeply engaged in this one, and that's continued at home too with the older three. Strategic, creative, full of action and a bit silly too.
Cribbage - A Solstice gift for Steve, I'm falling a little bit in love with our nighttime winter cribbage games. I remember my grandparents and parents playing often, but never learned myself until this very winter. I will confess to hiding my favorite deck of pretty cards (you can see the face of them in this instagram photo of mine) for those evening games with just Steve. Cribbage is best enjoyed, I dare say, in front of the woodstove with a bit of popcorn and rye whiskey.
What are you and yours playing most of all these days?
