Today, we bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor, Woolen Moss Farm & Studio. In Kate's words:
"My Etsy shop is dedicated to quality handmade clothing made from all natural, low impact dyed, and organic materials. All designs reflect my ideals of wearing clothing that is both good for your body and good for your earth. Every body is beautiful and unique and should move freely beautifully through this world."
SouleMama: Tell us about a business you admire or use as a role model in the work you do?
Kate: I am so very inspired by the work of Natalie Chanin. She runs a company called Alabama Chanin (www.alabamachanin.com) which offers high end organic clothing made entirely by hand by local Alabaman women who used to work in the textile mills there, but have lost their jobs to oversees manufacturing. The clothing is out of my reach as far as purchasing goes as it may be for you too, but it is a great example of a business thriving even when the price reflects the true cost of hand making the entire garment. Also Natalie is investing in her community and bringing jobs to highly qualified people who have otherwise been outsourced. I don't intend to follow in Alabama Chanin's footsteps, but I am greatly inspired by her motivation and success.
Kate: When I was a child I wanted to be a nature photographer, a marine biologist, a bee keeper, an auto mechanic, a pilot, a horticulturist, a veterinarian, a fire fighter, a journalist, a baseball player, a social worker or an artist. I'm so very pleased to say I got to become an artist, but I'm also pleased to be able to pass on to my son the importance of dreaming!
SouleMama: What role does 'handmade' play in our society?Kate: I feel that hand made is taking on a new importance. Communication has gone global, and so has manufacturing. Sometimes this means we can connect with people all over the world in positive life changing ways. But sometimes we find we have forgotten how to connect with our friends and neighbors and also how to take pride in the things we choose to own, that maybe came from so very far away. In this global market disposable fashion has allowed us to buy and toss on a whim. Handmade now bravely carries the burden of bringing the world closer together through communication and craft. And I think it's doing a fantastic job.
Kate: Well this is an easy one. My son. He is truly our greatest work. And watching him grow and change every day is proof that the simplistic and creative lifestyle my husband and I are committed to is producing something beautiful.
