SouleMama: Tell us about the beginning of your business.

Jennifer: I started Monaluna in June, 2010, 3 weeks after my daughter Anabelle was born. The plan had been hatched 15 months earlier, when I was licensing my artwork to a large fabric company, and I was starting to learn about the environmental impacts of conventional cotton production. I became really interested in offering organic fabric alternatives, and eventually decided to start my own fabric business. I had no idea that I would have a newborn by the time the company launched, but it all worked out really nicely.

SouleMama: Tell us about your customers.

Jennifer: My customers are so, so great. I sell to both individual customers and wholesale shops and businesses, and I love working with all of them. Most of my wholesale customers are fabric store owners or product designers, predominantly women, and I really enjoy seeing how they’ve built their businesses and the innovative way they run their shops and studios. I don’t have as much interaction with my retail customers, but I love sending little packages of fabric all over the country and the world, and I do get the occasional email about the fabric, or a photo of the project it was used for – I love that!

SouleMama: What’s the product or offering that you are most excited about in your shop right now?

Jennifer: This fall we’re introducing organic knit fabrics, and I’m really excited about them. We have two groups coming out – one is woodland-themed and more juvenile, and the other uses more sophisticated prints from our recent Raaga collection. We’re also introducing 3 new patterns for knits, including a ridiculously cute onesie and yoga pant combo that works perfectly with the Woodland group.  Lots of knit cuteness!

SouleMama: What advice do you have for people wanting to be more creative?

Jennifer: I think you have to incorporate creativity into your lifestyle, rather than holding it out as a goal to be achieved. I love the idea of doing a craft group, or breaking out the oil paints on the weekends, but the reality of my busy life – and I think most people’s lives – is that it usually doesn’t happen that way. Dinner can be creative, yard work can be creative, a birthday party or dinner party can be a goldmine of creative opportunities… I think we have to look for those opportunities in everyday life. Also, it helps to photograph things – I tend to look at things a bit more artistically when I have a camera handy.
