SouleMama: How long have you been in business?

Oak Meadow: Since 1975

SouleMama: Tell us about your background. What path led you to the work you do today?

 

Oak Meadow: Founder Lawrence Williams, Ed.D., started the school in 1975 in California when he and his wife, Bonnie, decided their children's public school was not a good fit for them. Lawrence, a trained Waldorf teacher, is considered a pioneer and innovator in the homeschooling movement whose early work in the field helped homeschooling gain widespread acceptance and legal status. Today the school is run by Executive Director Michelle Simpson-Siegel, M.S.

SouleMama: In your mind, what is that one thing which makes your business different?

Oak Meadow: At Oak Meadow, we believe that children are sensitive and intelligent, learning can be enjoyable, and education should be integrated into life. We've offered a blended approach--progressive, experiential print-based curriculum combined with online collaboration--longer than others in our field.

SouleMama: How has your business changed over time?

Oak Meadow: Oak Meadow now enrolls 500 students in grades K to 12 from around the world and provides curriculum to thousands more each year. A for-profit business for nearly 40 years, Oak Meadow has applied for non-profit status as founder Lawrence Williams prepares for retirement and in an effort to better serve homeschooling families.
