SouleMama: What inspires you?

Kate: My best inspiration comes from leaving my studio for a while. Walking through the woods, tromping through the creek in my mucks, strolling up my country road. I've tried the fashion magazines and all they seem to do is show me what I do not want to wear. I think my fitted looks are so that briars cannot snag my sleeves and my loose looks are so my body can breath when I fill myself with exertion. My leggings help me leap from rock to rock, and my skirts allow me to wade deep into the water. I want to be able to move freely in my clothes. To walk in the woods and tromp through the creek, don't you?

SouleMama: Is there a special place that inspires you?

 

Kate: I know a lot of people love the ocean. Sunshine, playing in the sand, swimming, relaxing. And I do enjoy those things as well, but something else happens to me when I'm near the ocean. I feel full yet light at the same time. I feel like I'm standing at the beginning and the end simultaneously. If it's summer I float on my back feeling the waves roll beneath me for hours. If it's winter I stand at the edge and feel a push and pull that both puzzles me and energizes me. I only get to visit the ocean once or twice a year, but it fills me up with energy and vision that I take home with me. It makes me feel a part of something bigger than myself, but it also makes me want to bring home the best version of myself. It fuels me. It inspires me. I blow it a kiss goodbye every time I have to walk away.

SouleMama: What does 'being creative' mean to you?

Kate: Being creative is a state of mind that you can bring to everything you do. It's a desire to create something from nothing, or from anything at all. It's in the way you approach your day. The way you place your child's breakfast on their plate. The way you craft your interaction with a colleague or family member that day to elicit a smile. The way you wear those pants with that shirt. The way you write your name or the way you plant your garden. Creativity is something that sadly some people don't believe they have, but it is not just available to a select few. It's accessible to anyone in anything you do.
