Fueled by the sweetest of a two year old director and the excitement and assistance of her siblings...this room came together smoothly and with ease. Annabel has her own 'room' now, and she is more than thrilled about it. "I be in my room," she'll declare to all, with the authority of a very big girl, as she heads up the stairs, barefoot (I can never keep slippers on her), with a book tucked under one arm and one of her precious dolls dragging behind from the other hand.
It is, indeed a simple and wee little space. But it holds all her things, and gives her a bit of her own room to play, and feels like her to all of us. In the end, we decided that - for the time being anyway - official "doors" weren't called for - the curtains do create a lovely sense of space separation and privacy in a way, while still keeping that tall ceiling open, and oh so much light in. It works for now, we'll play it by ear in the years to come. (This Mama got a little sniffly thinking about the young age she'll be when her big brother(s) might someday vacate their room(s). Oh!)
She has quite a few lovely old family treasures in here, many that we found and tucked away for her during our summer of cleaning out Gram's house last year. The old iron bed (read below for detail on refinishing that), the parasol that hangs from the ceiling. The fun pig bank my Mama made for me. Doll quilts from my great grandmother. I was worried about the pink once I got it on the walls - it's so pink. Strawberry ice cream, we all decided. But she - she loves it, and it softened a bit once all the wool and gauzy white joined the room. And her quilt. Oh, I loved making this quilt. I hope that it looks and feels feminine and soft, earthy and natural, playful and fun. The very things I think of her, and hope for her. It was a pleasure to make - and really such a pleasure to create this little nest of a space for her. It has some of the loveliest light in the house (for fun, here's the space when we moved in, and then a little while later), and there have been more than a few ocassions already where I've found one or two or three siblings snuggled up with her in here, playing blocks or dressing dolls, or reading a story on her bed.
