SouleMama: What inspired you to start your business?
Amos: I opened my shop in 2010. Back in 2007 our little man Henry was born. With a strong desire to be a stay at home mama, I decided to cash out my 401k and leave my job. We got by for awhile but soon the money was dwindling and I decided to get a job, that's then the economy tanked and I couldn't find work.
While I was home, in an effort to save money, I learned to sew, bake, can and make wooden toys for Henry.
With a need to create, put food on the table and still stay at home to raise my boy- a tiny seed started to take root and Apple n Amos was born.
We have never looked back since.
SouleMama: How do you come up with new designs and ideas?
Amos: I like to read and being a new mom I read all sorts of parenting books. I found myself leaning towards Waldorf and Montessori approaches when it came to teaching. I also watched my son Henry, and now my daughter Amelia. Henry was my first inspiration. He liked to sit and tinker, put things in a special order. Now Amelia, she is completely opposite of Henry, she likes to take things apart and she never sits still for long.
SouleMama: Tell us about your customers.
Amos: Our customers come from all over the world and all walks of life but I'd like to think my customers are a little like me. Parents who don't want to spend a fortune on toys that only do one thing and watch as their child gets bored of it a few weeks later.
They want to get a special toy that offers more than one way to play, a toy that promotes creativity and maybe even teaches too. A toy that fosters imagination and happy memories at the same time. A toy that can be passed on to their grandchildren.
