SouleMama: How long have you been in business?
Jennifer: In two weeks we'll hit our 4-year anniversary!
SouleMama: How do you come up with new designs and ideas?
Jennifer: For me, designing is a very visual process, but I always come up with my best ideas when I'm pulling inspiration from a wide variety of sources. I like to make sure I'm "filling the well" of visual stimulation and inspiration by traveling, paying attention to the natural world around me, and taking in a lot of beautiful imagery, whether from magazines, viewing art and photography or Pinterest. But I also really like to read the newspaper (the Sunday NY TImes is my treat) and keep track of what's going on in the world. The best ideas usually come when I have a lot whirling around in my brain.
SouleMama: How are children incorporated into your business?
Jennifer: My daughter was just 3 weeks old when my business launched, so she's been a part since the beginning, but as she grows she is starting to really want to be an active participant. She just turned 4 last week, and she's been loving to play with my fabric scraps and arrange them into quilt designs, and she likes to get out the crayons and colored pencils and draw when I'm working on artwork. She's always been our primary model, but more recently we've gotten the whole neighborhood involved, so our photo shoots are more like little block parties.
SouleMama: What does "being creative" mean to you?
Jennifer: I love coming up with ideas. I feel the most inspired and "creative" when I'm brainstorming and visualizing things I want to create. The actual making of the thing tends to be harder, and doesn't always go as planned, but it is all part of the process. When it does all come together and I'm able to realize that initial idea, it's a truly wonderful feeling.
