Meet the newest additions to this (increasingly not-so-little) homestead of ours. Four little ducklings! Three hens and one drake, of the Black Swedish and Blue Swedish breeds. Ginger, Taffy, Coco and Herman, they've been named. The hens named for their personalities, Adelaide says. And she gave her brothers the honor of naming the boy, who they promptly named after their favorite skateboarder of the moment (Bryan Herman - oh the things a Mama must remember).
These ducks belong to Adelaide - they are entirely hers to care for and adore, having been at the top of her wish list for a very long time now. But Papa wisely said we couldn't add more ducks until we had a source of water for them. The pond was dug last year, and that pasture fenced in just last week. The ducklings arrived a day later as we were hearing "I've already waited for years!" She's right.
They've settled into the brooder quite nicely - not quite ready for the pond and duck house, of course until they're bigger. They have yet to be introduced to Stellaluna - Adelaide's duck who believes herself to be a chicken - but she thinks they'll all be fast friends. No doubt they will, with Adelaide at the helm to keep them all in order. Though, truth be told, we are all enjoying these little ones. We've never had ducklings before - they're so different than baby chicks. So full of personality, and incredibly funny to watch.
Never a dull moment. Not a truer thing could be spoken about these days!
