Today, we bring you a giveaway from SouleMama Sponsor, Woolen Moss. In Kate's words:
"I make organic custom clothing, specializing in wool, cotton and bamboo. Take time to wrap your body in goodness, and care for your planet at the same time.
Send me a quick email at [email protected] if you’d like to join my mailing list for occasional sales and updates."
SouleMama: What inspired you to start your business?
Kate: Before I started Woolen Moss, I was a seamstress, a bookkeeper, a waitress, a gardener, an apple picker, a shop keeper, and many other things. All during this time I was always a maker. Starting Woolen Moss allowed me to embrace what I was at heart and turn it into what helps to sustain me and my family. My inspiration was finding a way to honor who I am.
SouleMama: What inspires you?
Kate: Fabric. I am so in love with fabric. I love how it drapes, how it’s made, how it curls, how it stretches. I find that many of my designs are inspired by the fabric I find and how I want it to wrap around my body. I want the fabric to show what I want it to show, hide what I want it to hide, and allow me to move freely throughout my day without having to pull, tug, or to "suck it in" to feel or look good. I want to swish and stretch, and feel strong and beautiful. And I still don’t think I’m asking too much of my fabric.
SouleMama: How do you keep yourself motivated, and avoid burnout?
Kate: There are two versions of myself, and the trick is remembering to honor both of them. Some days I avoid burnout by going to yoga, taking the dog for an extra long walk, having one more cup of tea, pouring over some textile or fashion books on the couch, making myself a lovely little lunch, meeting my son after school for some ice-cream, and having a great family dinner in the evening. Not a lot of work getting done on days like this, but when I return to work I feel refreshed and like I’ve given myself some much needed personal time. It makes me feel ready to dive back in. So on other days I keep the motivation by getting into the studio as early as possible, refusing answer the phone, turning on some music, and spending the entire day getting a weeks worth of garments cut out and ready to start sewing the next day. Honoring my whole self, that’s what works for me.
SouleMama: Is there a creative pursuit you haven't explored yet, but would like to?
Kate: I’ve always wanted to design textiles, since before I ever started making clothing. There’s something that draws me to turning an already beautiful piece of natural fabric into a composed work of art, it just intrigues me. But to be honest? I’m also scared of it. I back away and say “that’s what OTHER people get to do, I do something else”. And for now, that’s true. But I’m convinced that someday I will find the mental space and boldness to honor this part of me as well. I may start with baby steps like block printing, but hopefully someday you’ll see my own fabrics creating my own clothes, for you.
