I was right about that - there's a lot that happens in ten days in a garden in June! When I got home after a red-eye (who ever decided that was a good idea?), I properly hugged and loved up my babes, and then eventually found my way to the garden. I couldn't believe what I was seeing - everything was so much bigger than when I had left it! And this week, in between catching up on work and housework and kid love, and of course fitting in some new knitting excitement, I've been trying to catch up in the garden too. Planting a few things that didn't take the first time (two varieties of squash, for some reason....and cucumbers), weeding and weeding, and thinning things too.
This week, in my garden, I've been....
bringing in spinach, kale, herbs, radishes and garlic scapes!
mulching heavily, with a mix of this and that, whatever we have - last year's leaves, wood chips where appropriate, and the prettiest mulch of all - belly wool from our sheep (that's what's in between the bean poles above).
seeing lots of garlic scape jewelry on my garden guests!
thinking it's time to get my preserving self in gear - there is spinach to freeze and radishes to ferment and chives to infuse in vinegar.
checking, two times a day, for the tortoise beetle, potato beetle, and 3-lined cucumber beetles that have already made their appearance.
sitting, on my garden bench, and feeling so grateful that it's there. Sometimes just sitting still in the garden I learn so much more about what's happening in there than when I'm rushing about.
enjoying the border perennial beds that are really taking root this year, and spreading and filling out and giving me color and good smells all day, not to mention making the butterflies and bees as happy as can be.
appreciating (for the most part) the sounds, sights and smells of having - just outside of the garden fence - teenagers on a half pipe, and three pigs in a pen. Company and entertainment for my garden time.
waiting, anxiously, for peas. Any day now!
wishing you a lovely week in your own garden.
. . . . . .
During the growing season, I share a garden update once a week. If you are doing the same (on any day of the week) in your own online space, please leave a link in the comments section below so that we can take a stroll through your garden! Or simply, in your words, share what you've been up to in your own garden. Be sure not to miss the comments of these posts, as the garden wisdom shared by all of you is such a beautiful thing to see - I learn so much every week! Thank you, friends. And blessings on another year in the garden!
