Greetings from Brooklyn General Store!
Brooklyn General Store and brooklyngeneral.com strive to recreate a time when people would center their day around a trip to the general store. It is more than a shop, it is a calm, creatively stimulating, and comforting space, a counterpoint to hurried NYC life. It is a place where the peaceful nature of handwork is loved and respected. It is where country fiber warms the big city and the world wide web. Brooklyn General Store is home to all kinds of natural fiber yarn; new and vintage fabric; knitting and sewing notions; carded fleece fibers; wool felt; woven gifts; buttons; milk paint; natural dyes; sewing and knitting tools; quilting supplies; books on all kinds of crafts; embroidery supplies; vintage quilts and aprons; drop spindles; sewing machines; and many other things. In addition to tools and supplies, we offer a beautifully curated sampling of unique hand made goods. Brooklyn General also offers a wide array of classes, as well as studio time on our classroom machines.

SouleMama: Since the last time you were featured on SouleMama, in what ways has your business grown or changed? Tell us about it.
Catherine: Since our last Soulemama feature, BGS has added loads of new goods: Linen kitchen cloths and aprons by Fog Linen Work, shawl sticks and leather closures and handles from JulDesign, The sweetest felt hand sewing kits from Threadfollower and embroidery kits from Kiriki Press just to name a few. We have re-packaged our house natural dyes and are now stocking Anzula Yarns. We have just received a big shipment of beautiful wool fabrics from Japan just in time for making new Fall coats. Finally and most importantly, we are now selling donated yarn for charity. We are re-packaging donated natural fiber yarn and all of the profits are donated to local women's shelters in New York City. We call this re-packaged yarn "Yarnity"
Since our last Soulemama feature, I have launched another child out into the world. Gut wrenching and wonderful at the same time. I wonder if I spent enough time connecting with her while she was home. I wonder if she will continue to make things now that she is away from me and the shop. As you can imagine, the shop spills over into our house and there are projects happening all over the place. I wonder if she will be able to ground herself when she needs to. She, like me, finds her center through making things. I meditate on letting go every day. I know that even though they leave the nest, they rely on it every day from far away.
In addition, Brooklyn General Store would like to offer SouleMama readers 10% off storewide through November 15th. Enter the code soulemama11 at checkout.

Would LOVE a shop like this in my area. When I lived in a rural area there was a general store ( mostly grocery) but family run for years and a place where folks gathered to "visit" and find out the latest county news. Miss that.
