Greetings from Woolen Moss ~ Custom Organic Clothing! 

Sometimes, when I’m in the middle of making a woolen sweater dress or a pair of french terry pants, I pause and think to myself. “Maybe I’ll be a doll maker when I grow up, or a stone mason, or a wood carver. All hand sewn (or hand built, or hand carved), with the littlest of details that will make them so well loved.” And then I realize, that I AM a grown up, and I’m a clothing maker. Then I have a feeling of relief. And then I have a feeling of being trapped! When did this grown up thing happen? And am I stuck here now? Then my mother comes to visit and I feel like a kid again. Then my son runs through the house with a troupe of boys, and I feel like a grown up again. And I realize it’s all so fluid. I am not trapped, I just am where I am today, and tomorrow I may be somewhere else. Although some may find this to be a frightening and unstable thought, I find comfort in it. 

 

Today, I find comfort in making clothing for people all over the world. Wonderful, soft, natural fibers that keep us feeling warm, stylish, and hopefully loved (even if just by ourselves, for self love is one of the most important kinds, right?) Beautiful earthen colors that highlight the pink in our cheeks, or shapes that show the gorgeous curve of our hips. We are beautiful people of all shapes and sizes, and I get to drape a bit of love and warmth around so many. Sitting down to read feedback from my customers on my Etsy site just makes my heart sing. It’s quite the blessing really.  

 

You never know what might come tomorrow, or next year, or in ten years. All I can say is, enjoy the clothes, and love what you do, today.

SouleMama: Since the last time you were featured on SouleMama, in what ways has your business grown or changed?

Kate: It seems as though people are really missing the specialty wools in my shop. I tried to eliminate them because although I make sure they are of high quality and 100% wool, they are not organic. But I do know a thing or two about raising sheep, and have done loads of research on commercial sheep raising too. It turns out, an organic certification for sheep is incredibly difficult to come by, especially when you are getting merino wool from the mountains of South America, or the rolling hills of New Zealand (we have no commercial sheep operations large enough in the USA to have any significant wool crop) The reason this certification is so difficult is simply because sheep graze. They cannot be fed a grain only diet in a feedlot, with loads of antibiotics, they just won’t survive. To produce a fine wool crop, you simply need wild grazing sheep. Organic or not, this sounds like a wonderful source of clothing to me. So I have decided to maintain my strict organic standards with cotton, as we all know it is so heavily sprayed, but to make room for some really amazing wool fabrics that are out there.
