Greetings from Little Truths Studio! 

I'm Lori Roberts of Little Truths Studio. I make watercolor art prints and greeting cards in my home studio outside Portland, Oregon.

For me, painting is a way of celebrating all the little truths this world has to offer, everyday miracles worthy of celebration: the immense potentiality held within a tiny acorn, the cycle of the moon, the subtle meaning expressed in a poem or a simple act of kindness that changes someone's outlook. I like to explore our profound connection to the natural world, to the universe and to each other.

I took up painting at age 40, about 4 years ago, as the result of a growing need for creative expression in my daily life. I opened my shop in 2014 and since then painting has become the best way I know how to articulate mindfulness and gratitude. But not only that. As I watch the current American political side show emerge and "despair for the world grows in me", my painting becomes a personal declaration, a way of saying, "This is what I stand for."  It connects me to others who value nature, free expression, kindness, decency, connectedness, and social justice.

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

That is one of my most favorite Wendell Berry poems. I used to have it tacked to the wall next to my desk when I taught fourth grade. Hopeful words. I love that you began your new, creative career at forty. I am embarking on a new, creative change at almost-forty and it feels slightly terrifying, having spend the prior 15 years in a more traditional line of work. But it feels like the right thing, now. And so we begin and create and fill up our days with beauty.
