Greetings from Root & Star!
Root & Star magazine brings quality art and literature directly to your mailbox six times per year. It is a beautiful magazine filled with real art, stories, poems, and activities for young children and those who love them.
Christine and I are both writers and artists who then became mothers. She is situated in Seattle, while I am in Virginia. Just two years ago—I remember nursing my youngest child as I wrote Christine an email—I pitched a collaborative magazine idea that could fulfill us and connect us to other artists and parents. We dreamt of a way to inspire families to see the beauty in their children and in the world, and to inspire children to be their WHOLE selves—to feel all of their wisdom and their wildness. We believe that people of all ages can enjoy quality art and literature, and that children’s literature should be beautiful and thoughtful enough that the whole family can be inspired. Root & Star was born.

Courtney: We are the midnight workers, the painters with a studio close by a sleeping child, the ones who jot notes on our hands while our children play. Since launching the magazine last year, we have grown from a handful of subscribers (thanks, Mom!) to being shipped to many distributors across the country. We keep trying to find that balance between the identities of the self and the family, the artist and the parent, and the art and the saleable product. We try each issue to ask ourselves these questions ever more rigorously: is the magazine inventive enough? is it wise enough? is it soulful enough? As we’ve grown, and as our world changes, our mission feels more serious: I wake myself up before dawn many mornings wondering how to best make art that meets my standards of wildness and beauty while also drawing children into the quietude of paper, of these simple magazine pages. As we better define ourselves, I see that we are connecting to the artist in all children – their individuality, their creativity, and the mysterious spirit that binds them to the ROOTS of the earth and the STARS of the universe. And as we do so, I also have had to acknowledge the increased cost of printing so many issues: because we are ad-free and have no funding or grants, we are indebted to our tiny readers and their generous caregivers, who help us to continue to bring beauty and literature to young families.
