Since the last time you were featured on SouleMama, in what ways has your business grown or changed? Is there anything new you'd like to tell us about?
Kate: Near the end of this summer my husband, son, and I went on a 12 day camping trip to the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. We were tent camping, so on our first day after landing in Salt Lake City we dropped by a coffee shop and then headed into REI for camp stove fuel. While walking around this outdoorsy city, I was wearing a pair of hiking shoes, wool socks, a short skirt, and a tank top with no bra (yay vacation!) I looked around me and felt at home. I missed my days of living out west. Nobody thought I was “too sexy” without my bra, nobody thought it was “too weird” that I was wearing a skirt with my hiking shoes. I was completely myself, and no one cared. Perfect.
For the next 12 days I enjoyed being in the mountains. It was familiar and comfortable, and I loved it. At night I wore my merino jersey top and my striped merino leggings to bed and emerged from my ice covered tent to pull on a hundred other layers and build a fire. As I walked along a path of other campers, there were sleepy smiles, gentle waves, and raised coffee cups. Again, no one thought my stripes were “too loud” or my layers “too many”. Again, I was completely myself and no one cared. Perfect.
I have this habit of letting my mind wander to different versions of my life so I wondered what it would’ve been like had we stayed in Colorado all those years ago. But after many days of hiking and hot spring soaking, it was eventually time to go home. We were weary travelers, ready for our own beds again, so we gladly boarded our redeye flight and made our way back to the Fingerlakes of New York. After a day of sleep I got up and drove to the store for some essentials. I was wearing my super wide leg organic cotton pants and a merino sweater, with my old to go cup full of hot tea and some gray hair sticking up on my head. No one thought my pants were “too loose”, no one thought my hair was “too wild”. I was completely myself. And no one cared. Perfect.
So maybe it’s not Salt Lake City, and it’s not the Rocky Mountains, and it’s not my small town in the Fingerlakes. Maybe it’s me. Maybe I wear what I want, what feels good. Maybe I am completely myself, and no one cares. Perfect.
